Inspiring Conversations with Sebastien Lutomski of Stride Parkour Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastien Lutomski

Hi Sebastien, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Like many young boys, I always loved climbing and jumping on everything as a kid. I was inspired by my neighborhood squirrels and the animated Batman series of the 90’s. In high school, I met a group of kids that trained this deliberately and gave it a name; parkour. It quickly became my favorite thing to do. Training with friends that support each other is such an empowering and liberating experience. That’s the experience I want to create and share with Houston families.

Upon graduating high school, I immediately began traveling internationally in search of adventure. Though I found a lot, I noticed that traveling was a lot better when I was feeling healthy and doing parkour. Training began to take priority. I started to feel that I didn’t need plane tickets to feel free.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In retrospect, opening a gym may seem smooth in some ways. But at the time, there was so much mystery every step of the way. So many big and small open-ended decisions to make. I struggle with analysis paralysis and this venture has been a great kick in the butt to make decisions faster.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am so excited to give Houston families a place to learn and experience the art of parkour. Everything is so much better with community; especially parkour. I’m so proud to be able to facilitate the growth of a parkour community and philosophy.

Parkour is the art of developing more control over one’s mind and body while exploring various ways to traverse a given environment.

It’s an athletic practice:
We practice various techniques that prioritize efficiency, control, and flow.

It’s an expressive art:
We practice and invent techniques that give us joy like flipping and acrobatics.
We work our creativity muscle by creating challenges for ourselves that we enjoy doing. Finding limits we enjoy pushing. It’s an individual journey that explodes with empowerment when combined with friends and a supportive community.

It’s a philosophical practice:
We strive to create joy from the present moment and environment. We question our self-perceived limitations.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ve learned not to be so quick to give up on an idea. It’s easy to see loads of potential issues and risk in anything but there is so much small-scale experimenting and research you can do before making a big commitment like signing a lease or quitting your job. For me, that was starting a weekly class outside and finding out that there actually were people interested training parkour!
