Inspiring Conversations with Shama Rasheed of Texas Psychiatry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shama Rasheed.

Hi Shama, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up all over the world as my dad was in oil and gas and we travelled quite a bit. I went to boarding school in England which further expanded my outlook on life and gave me a cosmopolitan view of the world. Always being the new kid in school ensured that I had to be outgoing to make new friends in the many environments I was exposed to. This naturally
led to my choice of Psychiatry as a field that I gravitated to as my ability to establish rapport with patients from all walks of life stemmed from my childhood. I loved the versatility of being a physician in the field of mental health and have been given the opportunity to have an eclectic career that expands several continents. Having been a media psychiatrist with my own television talk show, a Clinical Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine, The Chief Medical Officer of a Functional Medicine hospital, to running a forensic practice- testifying in trials all over the USA – as well as running a concierge private telemedicine practice, I have been blessed to serve our community in many ways. I believe in having a purpose driven life and it has been fulfilling in the most unexpected ways. Having a balance of physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual health has been my guiding principle in maintaining a peaceful and meaningful life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many struggles but I see struggle as an opportunity for growth and change! As they say in Texas- everythin’ in life is a lesson or a blessing’. Definitely having to be a single mom after 20 years of marriage and rebuilding my life was the biggest struggle. I was so blessed to be Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist. It was as if God had planned it all along as I was able to use my knowledge as a parenting expert to navigate the challenges of being a single parent to two young children. I hope to be a beacon of light to other single parents and teach them how to coparent for the benefit of our children. Having seen my children grow up to be successful well balance adults who love both parents has been the biggest and best outcome of all this struggle. It has stretched me and allowed me to grow more than I ever knew I was capable of!!

As you know, we’re big fans of Texas Psychiatry. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I offer nationwide forensic psychiatry services in addition to my private concierge VIP practice where all my patients have direct access to me as their physician. I testify in civil and criminal cases as a medical expert witness. It is incredibly challenging and fulfilling as I am able to help patients in acute distress and facilitate resolving their legal conflicts with solid medical and mental health expertise

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Stay grounded and humble. Be grateful always. Understand that to whom much is given, much is expected. The best life is a life of purpose and Faith is essentially service.
