Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamonica Scruggs.
Hi Shamonica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In the small town of Lufkin, TX, there lived a young lady by the name of Shamonica. That’s me! I am the owner of Lucky Hair Salon & Beauty Supply established in 2021. I assist individuals all across the world with hair loss recovery while providing effective daily haircare regimens.
Wow! Where do I start? My story started in poverty & I had no clue of it until I got older & figured out, we were considered lower income back in the day. My mother was a hardworking single mom of 4 after being married for right at 30 yrs. She made sure we had no clue we were lower class. At this time, we just knew as kids we were doing what needed to be done; we had a place to sleep and good to eat. I watched her struggle to make ends meet yet never failed at providing our needs. We didn’t have much, but we always found a way to get by.
One of our daily routines was carrying water jugs from a nearby store that allowed us to fill up our jugs. I vividly remember walking alongside my mother with my other 3 siblings, our arms straining under the weight of the heavy jugs, and then utilizing this water for bathing, cooking, brushing our teeth, etc. As a young child, I didn’t fully understand the significance of this task, but I learned the value of hard work and resilience from my mother’s example.
Years later, life took a similar turn for me, and although I’ve never been without water from a running faucet, I found myself as a single mother of two precious children. Juggling the responsibilities of being a full-time mom, a nursing student, and trying to work in the medical field as a CNA while doing hair from home when I could was no easy task. I relied on government assistance to survive, receiving housing, food stamps, and WIC to support my family. I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders, much like I did when carrying those water jugs as a child.
My journey wasn’t smooth sailing at all. I faced setbacks and experienced failure as I struggled through nursing school not once but twice. Working overnight 10 pm-6 am and then attending class 8 am-5 pm. However, deep within me, I carried the determination and perseverance that my mother had instilled in me.
Finally, the day came when I graduated as a nurse. I was proud of my accomplishment, but something inside me told me that the math just wasn’t matching & I had a wake-up call when covid hit. I was NOT getting a vaccination & this is when I realized that I shared a passion equally for beauty as I did for nursing. Therefore, helping others could be combined, so I made the brave decision to turn my nursing income into a full-time career by starting my own salon and beauty supply store in 2021!
Starting from scratch was not easy. I worked tirelessly, pouring every ounce of my energy into building my business. I faced countless challenges and setbacks but refused to give up. I wanted to create a space where people could come and not only feel beautiful but also grow as individuals. My salon is just an amazing vibe, you literally have to come get your own experience!
Years of hard work, dedication, and an overflowing abundance of faith finally paid off. Lucky Hair Salon & Beauty Supply store flourished, becoming a hub of creativity and growth in my community. I was able to give other talented stylists (business owners) and newcomers the environment and opportunity to teach, grow, and built a team that shared a vision. Lucky’s expanded just within one year with the help of my business coach, Candace Holyfield Parker known as Six Figure Spa Chick in ATL. I even moved into a spacious 2600-square-foot salon/beauty supply from a 200sq ft bldg.
But my success isn’t solely measured by my business accomplishments. Along the way, I met someone special and eventually got married, creating a loving and supportive family environment for our four children while helping me get started on my entrepreneur journey.
My journey from carrying water jugs with my mom to becoming a successful businesswoman was a testament to her resilience, determination, and the lessons I learned from her. I never forgot her humble beginnings and always remembered to position myself for greater things.
Today, Lucky’s not only offers beauty services and products but also provides opportunities for others to grow and succeed through business startup classes as well as offering classes on different services. I’m grateful for the assistance I received during difficult times, which inspired me to create a supportive environment for others.
My story stands as a reminder that no matter the challenges we face, with hard work, persistence, and a strong support system, we can overcome obstacles and create the life we’ve always dreamed of.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
During the crisis, I learned a valuable lesson about the enduring nature of certain industries, particularly the beauty industry and medical industry as I am a nurse as well. Despite uncertain times and global crises, I recognized that the beauty industry is resilient and will never die. This realization led me to select two career paths that I believe will always be in demand – nursing and beauty.
As a nurse, I understand that healthcare professionals are essential to society, particularly during challenging times when healthcare needs are paramount. Nurses play a crucial role in providing care, comfort, and support to individuals in need, making their presence indispensable regardless of the circumstances.
In the same vein, as a stylist, I recognized the importance of personal grooming and appearance, which holds significance for many people regardless of external events. Whether it’s for self-care, confidence, or professional purposes, the need for beauty services remains constant and resilient in the face of adversity.
By choosing these two careers, I have positioned myself in fields that are vital and enduring, ensuring that my skills and expertise will always be valued and in demand. My insight into the longevity of these professions reflects my foresight and adaptability in navigating the uncertainties of the world, emphasizing the significance of my chosen paths in providing essential services to individuals and communities.
