Inspiring Conversations with Sherif Zaafran of US Anesthesia Partners

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherif Zaafran.

Sherif Zaafran

Hi Sherif, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I went to Clements high school in Sugar Land followed by UT Austin before I went to medical school at UT McGovern. I finished my Anesthesia residency there and joined Greater Houston Anesthesia which later became US Anesthesia Partners. I’ve always been active with health care policy since medical school. In 2017 I was appointed by Governor Abbott to be the President of the Texas Medical Board. I’ve served in that role since then along with continuing to be a practicing Anesthesiologist.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a busy practicing physcian while being married and raising a family requires a careful balance of commitment to work, but also being present and available for my wife and kids. I’m blessed to have a great wife and awesome kids who help me maintain that balance.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an Anesthesiologist, my goal every day is to safely take care of patients while they go through an incredibly venerable and scary time of having surgery.

I’m proud to be a part of a physician run group that focuses on patient care and high quality.

What matters most to you? Why?
Connecting with my patients is extremely important. They put their lives in our hands on a daily basis, and that level of trust in me as a physician is something I do not take for granted.

In my role as President of the Texas Medical Board, protecting the public is my main duty. Having trust in our 100,000 outstanding Texas physicians is of utmost importance. Maintaining the integrity of that medical license is the most important job that I have in protecting the public.
