Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatianna Mott
Tatianna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey as a storyteller has taken me from the stages of New York City to the production rooms of major networks, and now, to the heart of Houston, where I work to uplift voices that have long been silenced or overlooked.
Before my time in media and television, I was a theater performer and open mic host in New York City. I created safe spaces where artists, poets, and storytellers could share their truths without fear or judgment. Those experiences solidified my belief in the power of storytelling as more than an art form, but as a means of personal and communal transformation. Beyond performance, it was about creating a platform for voices that needed to be heard.
That passion for storytelling eventually led me to work on Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour, a national wellness-focused stadium experience aimed at helping people reconnect with themselves before the world was turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after, I transitioned into digital media, producing and reporting for major outlets like theGrio, CNBC, and EBONY.
During that time of uncertainty, unrest, and change—particularly following the killing of George Floyd—I felt a deep responsibility to use my voice and platform to amplify critical conversations about race, justice, and the experiences of Black communities. I covered culture-shifting moments, telling stories that mattered when people needed them most.
My journey through media didn’t stop at journalism. I transitioned into unscripted television, producing docuseries for HBO and uplifting stories on Food Network. Through this work, I saw firsthand how real people (business owners, families, and cultural leaders) could inspire audiences simply by sharing their lived experiences.
As a producer, I also took on the role of coaching talent, helping everyday people articulate their stories with confidence and authenticity. That same passion led me into artist development, where I worked with creatives to refine their brands, stage presence, and storytelling. It was here that I recognized the power of personal narrative in shaping success—not just in media, but in business and community leadership as well.
That realization ultimately sparked the creation of Our Power Media, a Houston-based media consulting and storytelling platform dedicated to helping individuals and organizations reclaim their power through media. Through PR consulting, media coaching, and workshops like Confidently Captivating, we help community leaders, small business owners, and changemakers tell their stories in ways that connect and inspire.
Houston is a city of dreamers and doers, a place where history and progress intertwine. It is a city that has welcomed me with open arms, and I am committed to giving back through the work I do. By helping individuals and organizations craft their stories, I am helping shape narratives, and hopefully, shape legacies.
The heart of my mission is simple: when we own our stories, we own our power. Through Our Power Media, I want to ensure that the people of Houston—especially those who have historically been unheard—have the tools, confidence, and platform to share their truth. Because in a city as rich in culture and community as Houston, every story matters.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me into the person and storyteller I am today. I transitioned from theater to corporate to earn more steady income in order to keep up with my Duke University student loan payments. I was able to host open mics, concerts, and live events outside of that 9-5, which led to my work on the Oprah Tour, but then the pandemic shut down all live events and theater, especially in NYC, the epicenter. Making lemonade out of those lemons, I began producing digital events which garnered my transition into media and television, but just as I had moved to Houston, the film & television industry went on strike forcing me to shift yet again into full-time entrepreneurship as jobs became more and more scarce.
Transitioning from theater to media, then into entrepreneurship, came with a lot of uncertainty. Early on, I struggled with the instability of freelance work, often juggling multiple jobs just to make ends meet while trying to stay true to my creative vision.
When I was working in media during the height of the pandemic and social justice uprisings, I faced the emotional toll of constantly reporting on trauma within the Black community while also experiencing it myself. There were moments when I questioned whether I had the capacity to keep telling these stories, but I knew that amplifying these voices was necessary.
Moving into television production, I had to navigate an industry that often undervalues Black creatives and storytellers. Advocating for stories that truly reflect our experiences wasn’t always easy, and I had to learn how to push past gatekeepers and carve out my own opportunities.
Then, stepping into entrepreneurship with Our Power Media was a whole new challenge. Building something from the ground up—without the financial backing of a major network—meant making sacrifices, taking risks, and trusting the process even when things felt uncertain. There were times when I wondered if people would understand the vision or if the business would be sustainable. But what kept me going was the community and the individuals and organizations I worked with who sent me their wins reminding me why this work matters.
Every setback, from financial struggles to industry pushback to moments of self-doubt, has ultimately been a stepping stone. And now, looking at the impact Our Power Media is having, I know that every challenge was worth it.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in Divine Order. Every experience, whether challenging or rewarding, has been a necessary part of my journey. My move to Houston wasn’t an easy one. It came with personal and career challenges that, at the time, felt like obstacles. But looking back, I can see that every difficulty was a divine redirection, guiding me exactly where I needed to be.
My faith and spirituality are central to how I navigate life and business. Singing on the Praise & Worship team at Unity of Houston is one of the ways I stay grounded, and it reminds me that there is always a greater plan at work, even when I don’t understand it in the moment. Every trial, every storm, and every setback has stretched me, refined me, and taught me something valuable.
Rather than viewing things as “bad luck” or “good luck,” I see them as lessons and confirmations. If something doesn’t work out, it’s not a loss—it’s a lesson. If something flows effortlessly, it’s a confirmation that I’m aligned with my purpose. Even when things feel uncertain, I trust that I am exactly where I’m supposed to be. The connections I’ve made, the doors that have closed, and the unexpected opportunities that have opened all reinforce that belief.
So, for me, it’s not about luck. It’s about faith, growth, and being open to divine guidance. The only thing I can control is how I respond to life’s twists and turns, and I choose to reflect, learn, and keep moving forward with purpose and power.
