Hi Yuliya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been born in Ukraine, but lived all her life in Portugal, moved to Houston a few years ago. I’m 27 years old now. Started dancing in Portugal International Latin style in 2003. I received training from Ballroom and Latin world champions from a young age. I trained in different countries, like Ukraine, Russia, Italy and Spain and started competing professionally from a young age (12 years old). I won multiple national and international competitions titles like championships in Rising Starts in Luxemburg, Bulgaria, Portugal (+/-) 7 times) and Spain (7 times). I worked in a few dance companies, and after 3 years open my own Dance Studio- Dance Life Houston Located in River-oaks and Midtown, we are working approximately 1 year (1110 Van Buren St, Unit 2, Houston, TX, 77019).

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most difficult was to work for someone else, as I already have a lot of experience and I was difficult to hear how should I do or what should I teach. Plus it’s always difficult to be alone in a different country.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The most difficult was leaving my country, Portugal to follow my dreams (I’m from Ukraine, but almost all my life I lived in Portugal. All my life I was learning to be an attorney and practicing 6 to 9 hours a day. My mum, when my father pass away needed to work really hard to pay my University and dancing that was a week approximately between $600 to $1000 for private lessons and workshops, competitions, flights and dance dresses). I can’t say that working in different studios was a bad luck to us. I learned a lot about how to work and how to create my style of dancing and teaching. And I can say that today, I’m really proud of myself and my students, because we are family and we love each other and help each other.
