Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Cornelius Anthony Jr of Pearland

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Cornelius Anthony Jr. Check out our conversation below.

Cornelius , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
At least four days a week, my day starts around 3 a.m. That’s when I’m connecting with my producers and prospective producers in Champagne. We talk about how things are going in the vineyards, vintage conditions, and what’s coming down the line. Beyond the viticulture, I’m also focused on how we’re positioning and marketing their brands here in Texas. It’s a balance between honoring their story and ensuring it resonates with the Houston market.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cornelius Anthony Jr., and I’m the founder of Serene Champagne Selections, a Houston-based importer focused exclusively on grower-producer champagnes that are eco-friendly and vegan. What makes us unique is that we’re not chasing mass-market labels—you won’t find us bringing in the same bottles that line every grocery store shelf. Instead, I work directly with independent families in Champagne, many of whom farm organically or biodynamically, and I help tell their story here in Texas.

For me, this is more than importing wine—it’s about building cultural bridges. I spend a lot of time learning directly from my producers, understanding the land, and then translating that story into something that makes sense for Houston, a city that’s diverse, ambitious, and constantly evolving. Right now, I’m especially excited about bringing in new collectives of young and women-led producers, giving them a platform in the U.S. market for the first time.

At the end of the day, champagne is about celebration—but for me, it’s also about legacy, family, and creating something lasting here in Texas.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Without a doubt, my wife, my parents, my sisters, my best friend—and now my kids. They’ve always seen potential in me, even in moments when I couldn’t see it myself. Their belief has been the fuel that keeps me going and reminds me why I can’t quit.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. There were moments when partnerships—or really, investors—backed out, and as a dad trying to provide, it was hard not to question if I should just settle for where I was financially. I had this dream, but the bills didn’t stop. People close to me even told me to quit.

When my mom passed earlier this year, I hit my lowest point. She was one of my biggest supporters, and not hearing her voice anymore took the joy out of what I was doing. On top of that, the stress and anxiety started to take a real toll on my health.

I’m still working through some of that, but I’ve learned how to work with my anxiety instead of letting it work on me. And that’s what’s kept me moving forward.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that champagne is only for celebrations. The industry has leaned into that narrative for decades, but it actually limits what champagne is capable of. Champagne is wine—it has terroir, character, and soul. It deserves a seat at the table alongside fine Burgundy, Bordeaux, or Napa Cab. In truth, champagne belongs in everyday life, at the dinner table, with food, with friends—not just when you’re toasting a wedding or a promotion. That’s the lie I’m pushing back against.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That I built this just for myself. The truth is, everything I’m doing is for my parents, my kids, and my wife. I wanted to create something they could see and be proud of—whether they ever decide to join the family business or not. For me, Serene Champagne Selections is a living testament that hard work and perseverance can take you far. My legacy isn’t about me; it’s about showing them what’s possible.
