Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Julius Karow of La Porte

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Julius Karow. Check out our conversation below.

Julius , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day for me is a whirlwind of activity, filled with the joy and chaos of managing our busy household. With five amazing kiddos—four adopted and one in foster care—there’s never a dull moment! I find myself constantly shuttling them to different places, ensuring they’re where they need to be.

Right now, we have two in high school, which means extra layers of activities, homework, and all the accompanying excitement that comes with those teenage years! But that’s just one part of my day.

As part of Kingdom Care, I’m also on the move gathering and delivering items to families in need, or setting up furniture for those starting fresh. My trips to our storage building have become second nature!

Additionally, building a community of volunteers and donors is crucial as we transition into a full-time nonprofit ministry. There’s so much to do, but with every movement, I feel God at the heart of our mission—transforming lives and making a difference—so it’s all worth it!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Julius Karow, and I have the privilege of serving as the Executive Director of Kingdom Care, a nonprofit ministry dedicated to supporting children and families impacted by the foster care system. What started as a calling to simply show up for vulnerable kids has grown into a full-time mission to ensure no child is left without the love, dignity, and stability of family.

Kingdom Care is unique because we believe real, lasting change happens when we wrap around the entire family—not just the child. Whether it’s providing clothing, essential items, mentorship, or emergency support, our work is rooted in compassion, connection, and community.

I’m especially proud of the way Kingdom Care stands in the gap—meeting practical needs while building relationships that restore hope and dignity. Right now, we’re expanding efforts to equip aged-out foster youth for independent living, partner with local agencies, and mobilize churches to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the foster care space.

This is more than a job—it’s a calling, and I’m grateful every day to be part of a movement that brings light into some of the darkest moments children and families face.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My wife Shanda.

She saw strength in me before I ever believed I had it. She believed in the calling on my life when I was still unsure of my direction. She reminded me—patiently and consistently—who God created me to be, even when I was too tired, too discouraged, or too afraid to see it myself. Her faith in me gave me the courage to step into what I was called to do. She’s been my constant reminder that I am capable, chosen, and never walking alone.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. As foster parents for over 12 years, with 27 children coming through our home, there were moments that tested us to our core. The heartbreak, the goodbyes, the emotional weight—it’s enough to make anyone want to quit. And with Kingdom Care now in its fourth year, still running solely on volunteer effort and without steady funding, there have been seasons of deep frustration.

But through every challenge, we’ve seen God provide—always just in time and right on time. My wife Shanda and I have witnessed enough brokenness to break us… but instead, by God’s grace, we’re still standing. We’re not giving up, because we know we’ve been called to this. And we’ll keep pushing forward—tired or not—until every child and every family knows they’re not alone.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They’d say I care deeply about people—especially the ones the world tends to overlook. They’d tell you I’m all in when it comes to faith, family, and making sure kids in foster care feel seen, supported, and loved. I think they’d also say I don’t chase titles or recognition—I just want to be faithful to what God’s called me to do. Whether it’s showing up for one kid or building something bigger through Kingdom Care, what matters to me most is living a life that makes a difference.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I was someone who showed up—especially when it was hard. That I loved big, gave all I had, and stood in the gap for those who had no one else. I hope they say I was a man who followed Jesus boldly, who didn’t quit when things got tough, and who never lost sight of the mission. That I was a husband, father, and friend who loved well—and that through Kingdom Care, lives were changed, families were restored, and kids knew they were never forgotten.
