Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Keenya Kelly of Montrose

Keenya Kelly shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Keenya, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I am really enjoying going to all the different events that are happening in Houston to make friends. I know Houston has so much to offer and with being new back in town just a year I have just been following all the different groups and inviting people to tell me where they’re going so I can meet them there and have a lot of fun.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
So I am a video marketing and social media strategist. Most people call me the TikTok Queen because I teach tiktok marketing and Instagram marketing. I help business owners learn how to use video marketing and social media to get their brand in front of their audience and increase their revenue. What is unique about what I do is that I built my audience from zero to over 600,000 across different platforms. But that I’ve done it very authentically through being myself not very polished but just my quirky fun self.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My business Mentor when I was in network marketing back in 2002. He was a young guy that recruited me in his company but saw my potential and had me reading so many different books. He encouraged me to read and listen to CDs and pushed me beyond what I thought was my capacity to where I am so confident and bold because of what he instilled in me back then.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The biggest one of my life was probably when I went through a divorce 10 years ago. It was absolutely devastating and shocking. But instead of staying bitter I decided to go to therapy and focus on my relationship with Jesus. As a result I have healed from that situation but all childhood wounds as well and just helping me to become a much better well-rounded person. And a healed version of me.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
I think that everybody should be in therapy. I think that living this life on Earth can be awesome and hard all at the same time and that if you work with a professional they can help you navigate life. I think sometimes we are the way we are because of our past but don’t really realize we can be a better version of ourselves if we actually got some help.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people talk about how I was so adventurous and such a risk taker. How I didn’t have all the answers but that was willing to look like a fool in order to become knowledgeable about a thing. That when people encountered me they felt hope and purpose and like they could do anything.
