Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Margaret Alvarez

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Margaret Alvarez. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Margaret, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I know, I know—people think I’m nuts, but my day starts at 3:45 a.m. That early rise is simply my way of life. The sequence is sacred: coffee, prepping lunches, and then movement, including the treadmill, yoga, weights, and meditation. Why? Because those two uninterrupted hours of quiet are what I absolutely require. It’s the fuel that makes me feel grounded and ready for my day! Don’t worry, I give my self a break on the weekends…sometimes. Ha!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Margaret! I’m a creativity coach, artist, art teacher, and mental health advocate based here in Houston, Texas.

For the past 18 years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching art in private schools for grades K-8

In 2019, I started expanding my reach by sharing videos and teaching online art journaling workshops. I then founded My Artsy Coach during the pandemic, focusing on helping people combine creativity and mindfulness to find a healthy outlet.

Today, my work centers on developing workshops that teach a variety of art techniques and art journaling prompts. The goal is simple: to help you channel your emotions into a creative flow while learning how to incorporate mindfulness and gratitude into your daily life.”

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
The single biggest moment that reshaped my world was becoming a mom. My son, now ten, is my greatest teacher. Right before his third birthday, he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and that instantly changed my perspective on parenthood. My initial surprise quickly turned into a singular mission: to help him thrive. I dedicated myself to finding every tool, intervention, and resource available to help him navigate a world that doesn’t always understand him. Creating a clear path for his success is now my purpose. While some days are harder than others, his unique personality and unconditional love are a constant source of light, and they have absolutely made me a better person.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of failure is inherent to being human, and for an entrepreneur, it’s often magnified. Running my own business has forced me to confront this fear constantly. It’s an interesting journey with ups and downs, but I work through it by consistently applying the principles I teach. My ultimate lifeline is gratitude. I practice it daily because I know, without a doubt, that without that daily commitment to thankfulness, I wouldn’t have the perspective or the strength to keep going.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
The answer is a confident yes. I was definitely scared to share my ideas at first. But I quickly learned that when you’re starting a business and asking people to invest in your mission, you have to be completely authentic. People connect with authenticity and they want to see how you connect to the mission you’re selling. For me, that mission is my pure joy. Art is my love, and using creativity and mindfulness is a practice that I live every single day. So yes, the public version of me is the real me—take it or leave it!

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I truly hope people remember me as a source of light. The highest compliment I can give someone is to tell them, “You are a light,” because, to me, it signifies the best of humanity. I hope people feel that meeting me, learning from me, and experiencing my energy was a genuine gift in their lives. Ultimately, I hope to have been that kind of inspiring presence for others.
