We recently had the chance to connect with Mr. Johnson David Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
David, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Working with students at Team K2 Karate.
We could be working on a Kata, getting ready for a tournament, stripe testing or working on some sparring drills. I never think of it as work or something that I have to do, but rather something that I was meant to do.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the founder and owner of Team K2 Karate, a martial arts school based in Katy, Texas, dedicated to teaching traditional martial arts, Sport Karate and American Tae Kwon Do along with a focus on personal development and community building. Our classes emphasis on respect, teamwork, and discipline, along with physical fitness, mental toughness, and essential life skills. We ensure that students genuinely learn and earn their belts through commitment and hard work rather than just progression without merit. Team K2 Karate offers a variety of structured programs for different age groups and levels ranging from ages 5 and up. All classes are tailored to build confidence, coordination, and focus while learning self-defense while combing traditional karate training techniques that include Stances, Blocking, Hand-Strikes, Kicking Combos, Kata, and Sparring.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
A teacher has a powerful role as both an educator and a role model with responsibilities that go beyond just delivering lessons, this relationship has molded me into a better person and instructor over the years.
As a Karate teacher and business owner you have to lead by example, so if you teach martial arts, this includes staying in shape, being respectful, having self-discipline and staying sharp at your art. Students look up to their teachers, including Karate teachers and over the years I have changed my own view on how I perceive myself. Being a role model for students and families in the dojo helps me to improve my own self. When I teach a class, or coach a student, I never forget that instructors serve as role models; displaying patience, fairness, and kindness which teaches students how to manage their own emotions and interactions while learning lessons for life at Team K2 Karate.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Stay on the path, don’t step off the trail and wounder too far, you’re going to do amazing things.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, and that’s a fact. I sometimes run into students or family members at the grocery store, restaurant, or even at the movies. My lifestyle of focus, fitness and self-discipline never changes, it’s what made me who I am today.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What light inside you have you been dimming?
I would say being a martial art tournament competitor, it’s not about me anymore, it’s about the kids and Team K2 Karate students who have the passion to push themselves to the next level with their own skills. I will coach, train, inspire and guide them, but they need to understand that nothing worthwhile come easy, so train hard and let’s get of the sofa and onto the mat.
