We recently had the chance to connect with Mrs. Yashika Annang and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yashika , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, I’ve been finding so much joy in simply spending time with my family and loved ones. Life and business can be so structured and demanding, so having moments where I’m not tied to a schedule and can just be present with them has been really refreshing.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Yashika Annang, and I’m the founder of Hair Affair, a plant-based hair care brand created to help people restore and grow their hair with confidence. My journey started with my own postpartum hair loss, which inspired me to create products that were originally just for me. When I saw how well they worked, I knew I had to share them with others. What makes Hair Affair unique isn’t just the results our customers see, but also our commitment to social impact, from supporting families in need to creating opportunities for others along the way. Right now, I’m working hard behind the scenes on both personal and professional development, expanding our product line, and increasing distribution channels so we can reach even more people with products that truly make a difference.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
If we’re talking about my younger years, it was definitely my family and more specifically, my older sister, Gee Gee, who has since passed. She was my mentor and my best friend despite our 17-year age difference. She poured into me in ways I didn’t even realize I needed at the time. She always gave me my flowers and recognized my potential long before I could see it in myself. Gee Gee’s belief in me helped shape the person I am today.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there have been several moments, but one stands out from a few years ago. Life felt incredibly heavy, I was dealing with health issues, business challenges, and personal struggles that left me wondering if I should just give up on my business. I asked God for a sign, a clear, undeniable one, to guide me. The very next day, I received an email saying I had been accepted into the Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women Black in Business Program. That moment reminded me that even when everything feels impossible, perseverance and faith can lead to unimaginable opportunities.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
I believe the mind is incredibly powerful, more than most people realize. Our thoughts shape our reality. If we believe we can accomplish something, we’re right. If we believe we can’t, we’re also right. The mind truly has the power to influence our actions, outcomes, and ultimately, our lives.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who was kind, generous, and committed to lifting others up. I want to be known as a philanthropist, a servant, and someone who inspired others to believe in themselves and their dreams. I hope they say I went out of my way to help make someone else’s vision a reality, and that I made a lasting, positive impact on the lives I touched.
