Peter Kelly shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Peter, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
On a normal day, I wake up between 5:00 and 6:00, go for a run, and write for an hour and a half. I follow that with breakfast and a shower before heading to the office. As a marketing strategist, a majority of my day is spent behind a computer or a whiteboard, devouring news, and developing campaigns with clients. I typically take an hour lunch beak where I will work on side hustles and passion projects, and from 5:00 to 6:30 I will work on editing the documentary film that I am producing.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Peter Kelly and I am a jack of all trades. I have over 15 years of professional film production experience, nearly a decade of marketing experience, I am a published writer, documentary filmmaker, and outdoor guide. I work full time for Mad Genius as an Account Executive helping clients strategize and develop marketing campaigns, and I love a good side hustle.
Some of my side hustles include Kelly Expedition Co., PK Production Services, and writing for magazines.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I was married at the ripe old age of 20, and at this time in my life, I was chasing money and dreams. I lost sight of who I was and I had forgotten what it was like to be happy. After getting divorced a year and a half later, I told myself that I will never be unhappy again. I stopped chasing the idea of a white picket fence, a chocolate lab, and 3.2 kids. I got off of the merry-go-round, and I never looked back. Since then, I have made feature films, traveled the world by living in a car for a year, led backpacking trips through the Desolation Wilderness, started companies, failed, and started more. Getting divorced opened my eyes to see what the world could be, rather than what I was surrounded by. I highly recommend a practice marriage. 10/10!
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
While I am grateful and happy in my current position, I do still have days where I wake up missing the glitter, sawdust, and slag of the art department on feature films.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Marketing is everything!
While marketing is one of the greatest tools for starting or scaling a business, we are not curing cancer. If you are organized, communicate well, and set clear expectations, there are very few times that you should have a client “fire” or a stressful issue that is keeping you up at night. Sure, we all want to deliver and we all strive to be the best in our field, but if you put in the time to educate yourself and you have a passion for what you are doing, you will knock it out of the park almost every time. Even though marketing is a science, NOT AN ART, it is supposed to be fun. Embrace the fun, plan, and control your life.
Work to live, don’t live to work.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Being easy to work with is the single most valuable trait you can have as a company owner, employee, or partner. this doesn’t mean being a door mat or a “yes man”. You need to be able to master the art of guiding conversations, being adaptable, and listening.
