Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Litz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Five years ago I was struggling with an auto-immune disease that kept me at home a lot. I wasn’t able to walk much and I’m a pretty active person so my mind was always racing. One day I saw some beautifully hand painted cookies on Instagram and fell in love immediately. Without the faintest idea of how to create such a delicate piece of edible art, I started searching. I baked my first set in February 2015. They were Easter cookies and very basic but I thought they were perfect and shared on my Facebook page. People wanted to order right away! The attention and feedback was feeding my soul at a time I thought my life was reduced to existing within the walls of my house. The turning point for this passion and business was the launch of Periscope. I had cookiers from around the world right in my kitchen, answering my questions, sharing their tips on things from hand painting to homemade edible watercolors to how to start a micro business. It was everything I needed. I had evolved into something I loved and still love. Today I like to make edible art that’s an experience like Paint Your Own Cookies with edible paint pallets and cookies that don’t look like cookies. (i.e. cross stitching)
My favorite is when someone comments “That’s a cookie?!?” Then I know I did well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My struggles were always health related. After I began recovering, I had a preterm baby and a long nicu stay. I thought my customers had surely moved on and found someone to fill their needs but when I came back…they were there for me. I have customers now that were there that first month. Actually, I have a lady on her way over to pick up some baby shower cookies that was one of those first customers.
Please tell us about Evolving Edibles.
I make edible art, specifically sugar cookies. My favorite style is watercolor and gel paints. I want to make people smile with what I do. A personal, custom cookie does that. There are a lot of us out there now days and I just try to be upfront and honest about my abilities and communicate well.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Be authentic. If you don’t know who or what you are yet, enjoy figuring it out. It’s a beautiful process. And don’t make decisions out of fear….take action.
