Life and Work with Catherine Manterola

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Manterola.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am one of the fortunate few able to say that I was born into a family of farmers and eaters. It was this foundation of true farm-to-table living that eventually led me into a career on the consumer-facing side of the food industry. Public relations in Oregon, international food events in Mexico City, branding and education in France and finally, establishing a marketing and events business in Houston.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No ride is smooth and mine is no exception. I knew early on that I wanted to work independently and where that has given me the freedom to find incredible projects across the globe, it is certainly a double-edged sword. I spent most of my 20’s broke, but fulfilled, living with family and friends, yet building a deeper network and wider views on life. Now at 32, I have a successful business and find comfort in my newfound stability. I may not have the freedom to pack up and spend three weeks on the go, but I have the funds. The beauty of working independently is I am able to accept the projects/clients that give me purpose and pass on the ones that don’t. However working alone is stressful and isolating, so my biggest advise would be to find other independents that have similar values and work ethics and make them your extended family. Go for coffee when you’re stuck with a client and talk it out. Ask for advice. Pick up projects together here and there. Start an event together. They are in the same boat as you are and us singles need to stick together!

And no matter what your age or situation, travel!

Please tell us about Squash Blossom MKTNG + PR.
I am a brand and events specialist with a focus on food and wine. My experience lies in food and beverage marketing, consultation, and producing large-scale events. I have worked in international markets in hospitality and food systems in the US, Mexico and Europe. I work with clients to develop modern marketing strategies and public relations campaigns to place their business top of mind in fast-paced and highly competitive markets.

On the events side, I specialize in food and beverage events that focus on sustainability and improving local food systems. That is, partnering with local farmers and ranchers to highlight local products and the chefs and butchers who understand the importance of utilizing local ingredients.

My background in meat, butchery and marketing led me to Southwest France where I was fortunate enough to work with GRRLS Meat Camp under Kate Hill, an organization giving women in the meat industry a foundation, network, and most importantly, a voice. Since moving home I have carried that message and worked with my family to organize various women-focused workshops on our 6th generation cattle ranch.
