Life and Work with Dr. Mintra Sattam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Mintra Sattam.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
“She’s going to go blind if she doesn’t wear contacts.” I was only in middle school, but that’s the statement my doc made that solidified my journey. When it was time to narrow down my career path in high school, I recalled this moment and thought, “there must be a better, less daunting way to convey someone ‘going blind’ especially to one who is half your size.”

First grade is when I was fitted in my first pair of glasses and my parents finally realized I wasn’t naturally clumsy- I just couldn’t see well. I was one of those people who felt like nobody could tell me anything I didn’t already know about my eyes because I’ve dealt with poor vision most of my life. Boy was I proved wrong when I entered optometry school. By the end of the four years, I had probably given myself five to ten new diagnosis that I’d never known before. The eyeballs are amazing! Also, I am not blind nor was I ever going to go blind.

I worked all over Houston after graduating, and this exposed me to several types of work modalities like commercial settings, private offices, and surgery based centers. I combined all these very different experiences to develop my new baby in the East End. EaDo Optics is about to turn one year old in February, and I could not have picked a better community.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d like to meet anyone who has ever accomplished anything in life by way of a “smooth road.” Pave one for me!

One of the biggest challenges with being an optometrist is having people understand what we do and care about their own eyes as much as we care about them. A lot of quick, volume-driven clinics focus on your prescription for vision, but all optometrists are capable of much more than that. A lot of us serve as the primary care providers of the eye world. We can be the first to tell you if something else has potential to affect your vision and/or compromise your health; after all, your eyes are connected to your body.

As far as advice for young women, don’t be discouraged when people judge you based on your appearance. I’ve been blessed with youthful looks thanks to my Asian background, but you are only as old as you act!

Please tell us about EaDo Optics.
I feel like I am the gatekeeper of the eye world as your primary care optometrist. If I’m lucky, I’ll see you every year to make sure your eyes are in tip-top shape! I am most proud of the service we provide at EaDo Optics. We make sure everyone feels cared for and gets that personalized experience. It is tempting to dive into the affordability of in-and-out clinics and the convenience of online outlets, but you need to come visit us if you are missing that human interaction!

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women may have to work a little harder for some things but if you can imagine the opportunity, you are well positioned for it.
