Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hester.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became a mom almost seven years ago and since then, have been searching for all of the answers. Like most moms, I turned to the internet to help me figure out “how to mom”. Houston Moms Blog became a saving grace for me because there were moms like me looking for the same answers and support that I was looking for. It is a community for moms of moms that live in our community, know what struggles we may be going through, and possibly, how we can go through it successfully.
I’m proud to work for Houston Moms Blog and proud of the community that we have built together, along with other moms in our area. Our diversity in the “types of moms” we have makes us unique. We are a voice of 40 different women that have been through what you have been through. I always say, “I may not have the answer, but I definitely can find someone that does.”
I’ve always been the type that is comfortable in any given situation, no matter who I am talking to. I enjoy being able to write down some of my thoughts, hoping there’s someone out there that can benefit.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ll admit that before I became a mom and somehow found myself with Houston Moms Blog, I didn’t have an answer to what I wanted to do or be when I got older. I just got older and somehow was supposed to know. It took me a long time to figure out where I fit {and in some ways, I’m still searching} and where I was supposed to be.
The best advice I can give someone is to find a partner that will walk alongside you and support you in your journey. I found someone who helped me figure out what I needed and where I wanted to go.
To all of the young women out there who may not know what they want to be, that’s ok. You’ll either figure it out or you will figure out what you are interested in. Make sure you stay true to yourself as you find your place and your voice. Use the people in your life as support; Help will always be there to those that ask.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a part of one of the largest parenting resources in Houston. Houston Moms Blog reaches across our vast area and into the hearts of tens of thousands of followers. Thanks to our amazing team, we had over a million page views in 2018 and continue to grow. We create guides to being a mom in Houston and write posts that we hope will help other moms. We have comprehensive guides to answer your most pressing questions: What doctor should I go to? What Christmas tree farm should we visit? Which photographer should we use? What events are going on this month? How do I potty train my kid? What are some new snacks or dinner ideas? We have the answers!
We have grown so much in the 6 years we have been supporting Houston and I am proud to be a part of that growth. We are a fully functional parenting website FOR moms written BY moms. Houston is amazing and we live here because of how unique our city is. It’s also huge so our job is to make our large city feel a little bit smaller, through our Community and Conversations group, social media accounts, Moms Night Out, family events, date nights, and more!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
To find a mentor, you need to know where you are and where you want to be. Who can inspire you to reach your goals? Who has been there before? You also have to be willing to put yourself out there. I’ve been to a supportive conference and received nothing from it because I was stuck in my own head. I wasn’t willing to put myself out there and possibly get rejected.
The most important part is knowing yourself and your goals. Give yourself validity, keep your head up, and work toward reaching those goals with people around you that will support you.
