Life and Work with Jenny Soto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Soto.

Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for fashion started as a little girl, I would love to take my mom’s old tops and make dresses for my barbies. I think my parents noticed that I cared more about them getting me more accessories, and clothes for my dolls rather than them getting me more dolls. Fast forward to college, I was still undecided on what I wanted my major to be. I was looking through a course booklet one semester and that I would take a class that sounded interesting to me. That class ended up being the inspiration and fuel that I needed for my passion to wake up inside me again. That class was ‘Intro to Theatre – Costume Design’. It truly felt like my inner child spoke to me. I later transferred to Texas State University and got my degree in Fashion Merchandising. Now, I have my own blog JenStyleHou where not only do I give fashion tips but also try to have a conversation with my readers about following their dreams (it’s never too late). I also assist photographers and clients with styling.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is true when they say, “you are your own worst critic”. I know, that the only reason I didn’t start my blog sooner was that I was comparing myself to other bloggers. To people who were doing this longer than me. Now, that I look back at it, I shake my head at myself for doing that. I didn’t know where to start, I didn’t know if anyone would read what I would write, and I was scared that by promoting myself I would annoy people. Until one day, I woke up and it was like my mind was clear. I decided to dodge all those negative thoughts I was having, just like I would dodge another negative person from my life, and started creating blog. I wouldn’t tolerate someone else giving me this negativity, so why would I let myself have it? So, my advice to you is, stop beating yourself up! Stop comparing. Start creating.

Please tell us about JenStyleHou.
I am blogger/stylist from Houston, Texas. I specialize in fashion, but I am also willing to have a conversation with my readers about life. I can show you how to mix luxury with fast fashion, so you will feel like the star you are (while on a budget). I know what it’s like to have to work with what you got and I got you.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I am very blessed to have a supportive family. My dad is a, “Never give up and work hard for what you want in life” kind of person. He made sure to remind me that every day, even now. My mom made sure that I didn’t doubt myself by telling me to say, “Not if, but WHEN, I become…”. My brother is my Jiminy Cricket. He is the person who I go to for advice and 90% of the time, it’s just for him to say: “Do it!”.
