Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Padon.
Kat, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in college, I was studying to be a doctor because I had a passion for helping people. Just before graduation, I realized I didn’t want to pursue a career in medicine, but I still had that passion for helping people and making their lives better. I had started to play with the idea of starting a blog with a fitness focus and with the support of my friends and family, I finally took the leap. While running my blog on the side as I finish graduate school, I’m hoping that people will see that being healthy and fit isn’t as hard or daunting as some people may think. I’m still just a beginner in the blogging world, but every day I’m learning something new and trying to find a new way to connect with people.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a lot harder than I imagined. From the outside, blogging seems relatively easy: post to Instagram, write a blog post, respond to comments; but it is so much more than that and it was definitely a wake-up call when I first launched A Southern Edge. I struggled, and still struggle, to find that balance between graduate school, my personal life, a social life, and focusing on my blog.
If you’re just starting your journey, like me, I’d tell you this: DON’T STOP. It’s going to get hard, whether trying to find a balance between real life and blogging or dealing with some of the negativity that can come from being so open on social media. Just keep going, keep being yourself, and have fun!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with A Southern Edge – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I focus on fashion and fitness but am most passionate about the fitness aspect. I used to despise going to the gym to lift weights despite being an athlete all my life, so I want to inspire those who may be just starting out and encourage those who are farther along on their fitness journey. If I can say that I inspired one person to push themselves a little harder, then I feel I’ve succeeded. With my blog, and especially my Instagram, you see the real-life behind the photos; the not-so-glamorous post gym, sweaty selfie, the struggles, as well as the accomplishments! I want people to feel a connection to me; like I’m their friend and we’re in this together.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think as women, we naturally have a higher empathy for others, so anything, where we can express that and help others, is a huge opportunity. Women are strong, caring, and fearless. We can do absolutely anything we put our minds to!
