Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Moultrie.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I’ve always kept to myself. Nice, but never went out of my way to make a lot of friends due to my own insecurities. Since elementary school, I’ve always wanted to help others. In the beginning, my target was young girls who dealt with insecurities and grew up without their father like I did, but as I became older I fell in love with helping the community, specifically the black community, as a whole. Learning in undergrad how society can truly affect a person’s well-being had an impact on me.
Has it been a smooth road?
The best advice I can give is go at your own pace and don’t compare yourself to any of your peers. I didn’t start college the traditional like most did going to a university first. I went to a 2-year school, changed my major the second year so had to stay an extra to get my Associate’s Degree. I transferred and stayed at the university for 2 1/2 years. I didn’t graduate in the ideal four years like most people did, and I’m so glad I did not because I was able to earn certificates and get experience in my field. Now, here I am in finishing up my last two semesters of grad school to get my Master’s degree in Social Work…… doing all this before the age of 30!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Currently, I am a full-time health educator. I educate, along with colleagues, the importance of HIV Awareness in communities. We also offer group interventions to help people with condom negotiation or healthy relationships for those who may test Positive. Basically teaching them how to function in society. Part-time I am a Health and Wellness Coach with Herbalife Nutrition because our physical health is just as important as our mental health. I am also currently getting my Master’s from USC and Social Work and will complete the program May 2020.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Yes, I am actually in an awesome book club currently. For personal development, I listen to motivational Podcasts every morning from therapists to recent college graduates. I also have personal trainer that I see 3-4 days a week which helps tremendously with my personal development as well.
