Life and Work with La’Shay Gray

Today we’d like to introduce you to La’Shay Gray.

La’Shay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It took me losing myself to find myself if that makes sense. I went through some pretty trying times, which left me feeling like I had no choice but to jump out on faith. In 2015, I started doing hair full time in a small space in downtown Lufkin, TX. Soon I found myself booked out for months at a time. Business was really good, but I wanted to go further. I moved to Houston in 2016. It was a bit overwhelming at first being in a big city and not knowing anyone. Social media and referrals helped me grows my clientele. I’m just getting started, I have so much more to do and further to go.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey that I’m on isn’t always easy. I come across a few bumps. The most important thing is that I keep going. It’s great to have a support system. I’m blessed to have a wonderful husband who’s always pushing me and encouraging me to be my best self. You have to remember the dream. That dream should be all the motivation you need. I can’t wait for my dream to become my reality. Success is a slow process and quitting won’t speed it up.

Please tell us about Pretty Stuff Only Braiding and Weaving.
I specialize in braiding and weaving. Most of my clients have natural hair and are looking for stylish protective styles. I love seeing a smiling face once they look into the mirror. A new hairstyle can give you all the confidence you need to concur the world. My clients rave about my attention to detail and professionalism. I love what I do and I make sure that it shows in my work.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Don’t let anyone including yourself discourage you. I feel as though we as women tend to be super hard on ourselves. Probably because we feel like we have a point to prove. We have to take care of ourselves through that process though. Mentally and physically.
