Life & Work with Madison Hamilton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Hamilton.

Hi Madison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In October of 2019, I began production on a video game with a very small team of friends. We’ve worked on it gradually and with a mix of volunteers and hard work, we are nearing a demo release. The game is a Visual Novel which is a form of interactive storytelling, imagine reading a book where you get to make the choices that determine the outcome. The game has 16+ endings and plenty of decisions for the players to make.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Money is the biggest obstacle when making an indie game. However, I’ve been blessed with volunteers who share a passion for the game. There was also a big learning curve as I’ve never directed a game before, I’m still in college getting my game design major so I’m constantly learning. Also, the uniqueness of the game is something I have to navigate. There is a community of people who play and enjoy these games but to a lot of people it may seem strange.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an indie game dev. I mostly direct but I write and occasionally contribute art. It’s my job to bring together a team and weave all the different parts of a game together. From voice actors to program coders and artists, I have to make sure the whole team has a consistent vision so the game fits together like a puzzle. I advertise and talk with fans which can be stressful but it’s amazing to see people’s support. Game designing is hard work especially for such a small team and with little money to fund production but the team and I are doing wonderful with what we have.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me is that people enjoy the game. Of course, I’m making the game because I want to, but I want to give a gift to my players. If I can make something that helps people take their minds off life or feel included then I’ll be happy. I want to inspire others through my game.
