Life & Work with Marvin Leonard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Leonard.

Hi Marvin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I knew that I wanted to involve music in what I do: who doesn’t like/love music?! Going from symphonic band to color guard to becoming a dance aide in high school, I fell in love with dance over the years, with no dance experience. I officially started my dance career in 2017; taking classes between Soreal and Soundbox dance studios. I have also had the chance to be part of “Rockets Launchcrew” back in 2018! It was fun, but I also knew that I wanted to pursue my own style of movement. Before during and after Launchcrew, I have trained in the art of Stiletto movement, and I have been attached to it ever since. Although I still consider myself a student because I learn new things everyday, I am also a freelance Heels Choreographer and Instructor in Houston, TX.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a male heels choreographer has been challenging for me, especially since when you don’t feel like people take you seriously. I have been told that heels is a “female art” and that “only females should explore this”. I don’t feel like heels belong to a specific gender, but for any/everyone that would like to explore it. I’ve been looked down on, laughed at while in the middle of a photoshoot, and there have been LOTS of times where I wanted to give up and throw it all the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Heels Choreographer and Instructor based out in Houston, TX and most individuals would know me for that here. I am most proud for not giving up on myself, and also the growth from a few years to now! I have a drive and love for what I do, and what sets me apart from others is that I take my unique style in this art very seriously, and with me: you never know what you’re going to get next.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Explore what it is that attracts you the most; talk to people, get to know everyone, support your friends! I have made so many friends in this community, and everyone has something different to offer! Be open to new things.
