Life & Work with Aaliyah Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaliyah Johnson.

Aaliyah Johnson

Aaliyah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My mom is the sole reason why I’ve come to love Photography. Ever since she started her own Photography business, I never missed the chance to be by her side. It’s physically impossible for me to not be. As her business grew, I got curious myself and wanted to try taking pictures. And, of course, my mom allowed it. I didn’t think anything of it, at first. It was just a fun hobby. As I grew older, I realized something, maybe a spark inside went off. I thought, well, maybe I can make something of this. This is more than a hobby at this point. And I can’t imagine myself doing anything other than Photography. This has become a passion, and it all started from my mother. Who would’ve known?

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been smooth, but I know it won’t be this easy all the time. Challenges are going to be thrown at you, you’ll feel like you should give up or that none of this is worth the trouble anymore. But if you’ve come this far, I feel like you aren’t meant to give it up. Nothing ever lasts forever, right?

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My photography mostly consists of dancers at Native American powwows. I photograph them during the dances, with their regalia and with their beadwork on. I am a member of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, and I am also a dancer at powwows. That is the reason for my photography having an emphasis on indigenous people.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I believe that it is it.
