Today we’d like to introduce you to AJY.
Hi AJY, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I started music in 2018, it was just a normal hobby to have fun, until I quickly fell in love with the creation. I started off rapping, but I wasn’t satisfied. I’ve been a long-time R&B and Soul music fan, so I began taking some vocal lessons in 2024 but had to quit due to uhm… money… After taking those lessons, I would still train daily by singing my favorite songs and figuring out my tone, completely changing my music forever. Now I use music as a way to express my emotions and help others not feel alone. I now predominantly sing genres like R&B and Indie Pop. There have been many times I wanted to stop, but when people tell me how much my music means to them, it keeps me going.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Having to deal with insecurities is/was my biggest challenge. It doesn’t make sense, but for the longest time, my voice was my biggest insecurity, which hindered my progress. Another challenge I had to face was coming out of my shell; it was hard for me to talk to people about my music and “get it out there”. Now it has become second nature.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer/songwriter based in Houston, Texas! I absolutely love music and singing to the point that I might be obnoxious with it. I am super proud of the community I have been building, especially over the past year. I enjoy knowing people find comfort from watching/listening to the things I produce. All I want is for people to come together. I want people to smile, but there’s also a beauty in sadness. Finding those people you relate to is powerful.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Failing is normal and shows growth. If you don’t fail, it means you aren’t trying. There have been many times I’ve wanted to step away and just forget about music, but I’ve put so much effort into this, I can’t quit, no matter the number of times I fail.
