Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Artis.
Amber, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started this journey of content creation in 2016 with a blog which at the time was a coping mechanism that I used to get over a relationship. The blog at the time wasn’t as polished, of course, but I do know that was the launching pad to my journey of self-discovery and authenticity. In hindsight, if I were more consistent at that time my community would be much larger due to how much content creation has grown in the last few years. Prior to 2022, I picked back up with blogging and even though spotty, I began curating a community of subscribers that wanted just real-life advice about things that mattered beyond the surface. Fast forward to 2022, I launched a podcast in January which was an extension of the topics I am known for blogging about, and this part of the journey has by far been the most rewarding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know if I can say “hell no”, but absolutely not. Nothing worth having is easy but it’s definitely worth fighting for. The biggest challenge is finding the motivation on days that are hard and extremely hectic. A lot of content creators work a normal 9-5 career, so finding that 5-9P motivation can sometimes feel mentally & physically exhausting. Another struggle for me has been finding the balance to make sure I am always providing authenticity and honesty to my community without sacrificing my privacy. I cherish private moments with family and friends and although my community is committed to the journey — not everything is a shareable topic, especially in the moment. I can appreciate that I try to have those boundaries. Last but definitely not least, the hardest piece for me is to truly create what I love regardless of if five hundred people engage with it or five. I want to always remain true to why I start every project and not be jaded by a culture that prides itself on going viral. And in those moments, I also must stay mindful that everyone will not find my content fulfilling or agree with my perspective on a topic. And that’s okay but I have to keep going. Quitting is never an option.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a creator but most of all – I am a black creator who is very candid, transparent & authentic. My brand She’s So Blunt has so many extensions which include digital creation, a podcast, website/blog, and this is just the beginning. My proudest moments come from my community of listeners and subscribers who find value in some of my advice about the darkest, brightest, hardest & most transformative moments I’ve experienced in my life. I get so much fulfillment hearing, “Wow. I really needed to hear that!” or “This episode resonated with me so much”. These moments reassure me that I am walking in my purpose to be more authentic and transparent to these ever-changing digital spaces we live in. My boldness and blunt personality definitely set me apart from other content creators because I am not afraid to admit everyday wasn’t the best. I also find the accountability I have for myself and being able to be transparent about my mistakes allows people to see me as a “real person” – and everyone can see a little bit of themselves in that.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I would like to think I’m the very same person today that I was as a child. All grown up, of course! Some of my favorite things included writing stories, reading, a true love for music, laughter, and food. All things I thoroughly enjoy today. I’d also like to think I was very opinionated and outspoken as a child, so that obviously never changed. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m consistent and you’re going to get the real, raw Amber in all environments. Sometimes as black women I think we shy away from that and tend to conform and show up how people or society says we should. You make the rules and show up as you – unapologetically.
