Life & Work with Brock Bourbon of Upper Kirby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brock Bourbon

Brock, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Music has always played a big part in my life. The earliest memory I have is, at four years old, being gifted a guitar and clumsily strumming along to 80’s hair bands. I would collect CD’s, study the artwork, and memorize every lyric to fully appreciate each element of what made those artists great. In middle school I joined the band program with the tuba being my assigned instrument. While in high school, I reached the pivotal moment of discovering beat making/music production. I would make beats for friends and they would record their vocals in a makeshift sound booth I built in my closet. Soon after I began DJ’ing in clubs, house parties, raves, graduations, and various other occasions. That went on for some time and although it was fun, I needed something different. My own sound. So here we are.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing about the music scene is easy. Perception is a powerful tool that can either work with you or against you. Most successful brands require a team to make them look and sound their best. As an independent artist/producer, it takes much more effort to execute at the same scale. There have been moments where I lose an opportunity due to being perceived as a more established brand. A good problem to have but one no less. I can’t complain about the trials I have faced for they fortified and educated me into the person I am today. I’m grateful for that.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My current sound is blending jazzy piano sequences with euphoric synths and impactful drums. When I listen to music, I can see it in shapes, and those shapes take form with the body as it enters the ears. The body then reacts with emotion whilst also being driven by the beat to create an environment of dancing and emotional healing at the same time. I’m known for pairing sad or remorseful lyrics with high-energy drum sequences and catchy melodies, creating a contrast that will to resonate with listeners ultimately taking them on a journey to a destination of their making. I simply provide the ship.

I’m particularly proud of my first solo release, ‘Game.’ It marked the start of my current sound and really represents what I aim to achieve in my music—an emotional yet uplifting experience.

What I think sets me apart is my desire to push the boundaries of how people experience music. I’m working on integrating augmented reality with my music to offer something new and engaging, allowing listeners to interact with my work in a completely different way.

What are your plans for the future?
My plan is to continue growing and building my network, as well as my catalog. I have many finished projects in the pipeline to follow my most recent release “FORGIVE ME,” which became available on August 9th on all streaming platforms.
As mentioned before in the future I will explore the augmented reality space and blend the worlds of visual and auditory entertainment. Thus taking the evolution of live performances to new heights. I am open to any collaborative efforts or ideas that will advance the development of this project.
