Today we’d like to introduce you to Calista Garcia.
Hi Calista, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For as long as I could remember I’ve always loved art. Everything about it intrigues me. I guess my adoration started when I was about four years old. That was when my grandma started taking me to the art classes she taught at the Boys and Girls Club. I have so many wonderful memories of that art room with her.
As time passed, my love for art continued to grow. Once I got older, I attended an art high school, the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, to enhance my artistic abilities. There, I experimented with every medium imaginable. It was where I discovered photography and text art.
Now, I’m currently a senior at the University of St. Thomas and I still continue to create art. I’ve been trying to find a way to sell more of my art, whether that be my paintings, prints, or even designing clothing. I’m constantly experimenting with new mediums or blending various mediums together. Art will always play a major role in my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest struggle for me has been allocating enough time for my art In high school I had three hours a day dedicated to creating art. Now, I’m a full-time student, a part-time employee, and a Vice President of a club on campus. Because of all my other responsibilities, it makes it harder for me to make as much time for my art.
When I don’t make enough time for it I find myself feeling very unfulfilled. It’s extremely difficult for me to function without having some form of artistic expression once in a while.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work revolves around painting, photography, and text. Throughout my work, I mesh photography and text with my paintings to give them more originality. A common theme throughout my work is the bright color palette.
Besides having the opportunity to talk about my work here, I’m most proud of having my work featured in shows at the Jung Center and Contemporary Arts Museum. Eventually, I would love to have my artwork shown in more galleries.
I think what sets me apart from other artists is that I work with various mediums. I begin my process by envisioning a piece and then figuring out the best way to execute it. This allows my work to not be restricted to one medium. Overall, I believe that I’m a well-rounded artist who isn’t afraid to blend new mediums.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was a huge nerd. I was into superheroes, superhero movies, and comic books. I loved going to the comic book store with my cousins and going to the theaters for all the superhero movies. Once I started middle school my parents started showing me classic movies and music.
My mom would show me her favorite 80s movies and my dad would show me all kinds of bands from Pink Floyd to the Smiths. I became obsessed with old movies and music and I still am today.
