Hi Ceion, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was a child I always had a love for performance. I found joy in anything that allowed me to create, perform, and express myself. I used to put on private shows for my parents, write my own stories whilst completely immersing myself in the world of storytelling, through film and television. For as long as I could remember I knew I wanted to work in film, but I had a hard time navigating which area I best fit. I really do enjoy acting in film, however there were other avenues I wanted the chance to scout out.
First stepping into the creative scene in Houston, I met amazing women that allowed me to comfortably express myself and be open to collaboration. I’ve worked on a lot of projects with the Producer title, and as of recently stepped into the Director title for the first time in our upcoming short ‘ Secrets Women Keep’ . It was a challenge to put myself out there, as well as scary. But i’m grateful for the obstacles because without them I wouldn’t have the privilege to work with great people, and bring amazing stories to life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I feel like working as a creative, there’s a lot of comparison and self – doubt that arises within us. I never went to school to study film, I also started primarily as an actress so a lot of the vernacular and practices felt very uncomfortable to me. The world in filmmaking is so broad, it was a complete 360 from what I originally knew. I created my own perceptions of how others viewed me because I either didn’t feel GOOD enough or I wasn’t DOING enough.
A lot of my obstacles were most certainly internally, but with support from my friends and family its helped me maintain being grounded. Also just overall being confident in yourself and work. ” Comparison is the thief of joy ” a quote that is used a lot, however it is so important to retain.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am one of the producers with GNO productions. There we write and produce original content while also collaborating with other aspiring filmmakers. I mainly work on the producer side, handling location logistics, creative direction for social media, hiring crew and cast, and managing payments. On other sets, I typically serve as the 1st AD, which involves scheduling, being the primary point of contact, and generally keeping the set running as smoothly as possible.
I’m proud that I chose to commit. I believe when things get hard and scary, its very easy to just give up and withdraw. However through the challenges I faced whether that be internally or outwardly I still kept going. And i’m super proud of that.
I dont think theres anything necessarily that sets me apart from others. We all have the same dreams and aspirations and love what we do. This is a tough industry to break in – the majority I believe are all willing and capable of obtaining it.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Try your best not to hold yourself back. If your interested in working in film, get out there and make connections! There are so many friendships that you’d be surprised that you make. Also when helping on a set, try not to close yourself to different roles. Whether that be as a PA, script advisor, or 1st AD. The more sets your on, the more insight and experience you gain. It’s also a lot of fun!
Try your best to keep going and remember that you are doing this for a reason. If something isn’t working for you, its okay to start over. Do things at your pace. Everyone has a different timeline. And that’s okay.
