Life & Work with Charis Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charis Johnson.

Charis Johnson

Hi Charis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Fall of 2021, I retired from the Prince George County Fire & EMS Department in Largo, Md after 17 years of service. Decided to relocate to Houston, TX for a change of scenery as well as better winters; snow is not my friend. Once I got settled, I began deciding what career would be best for me, what would be flexible, and what would be fun. I have never had a nine to five so punching a time clock wasn’t on my to-do list. So, I thought real estate. This way, I could learn the city, meet people, have a flexible schedule, and still make a difference in people’s lives. I obtained my license in the fall of 2022 and began working for Better Homes and Gardens Gary Greene shortly after. This has been one of the best things I’ve accomplished to date.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Real estate is not as easy as some people think it is. This is a business built on networking and who you know. I was behind the eight ball because I literally only knew one person when I moved here. There were times when I got discouraged, but then I remembered that my purpose was bigger than that moment of sadness. I went to just about every networking event/ social gathering I could find.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I honestly cannot say that I have a specialty, but I do work with people who feel like they won’t qualify for a home loan. It’s a process, and it takes a lot of patience and understanding. I’m willing to work with people who need more time than others. My goal is to make the dream homeownership come true for all of those that are interested.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
As a self-proclaimed taco expert, I’ve made it my business to try almost all of the taco places. Houston is a foodie town, and while my stomach looooves it, I can’t say the same for my hips. The one downside to Houston is the traffic and the construction that seems like it will never be finished.
