Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Guy.
Hi Charity, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
If you knew me when I was younger you would understand my passion for clothes. I use to always walk around in middle school with a sketchbook drawling clothes I would eventually want to make not knowing this was the start of my journey towards doing what I love to do. I eventually took sewing classes and brought those designs to life. My first ever piece that I sewed was a dress for my mom. These moments here gave me my purpose/calling. After that, I would always make my own clothes to stand out and be different from others. I would always get compliments and get told I should sell the clothes I make, but I never looked it at like because I made clothes to express myself and I just loved it. But one day I got a sign to start my clothing line and take it seriously… this time I’m going to finally listen because ideas have been popping in my head nonstop and I’ve been getting signs to start it for a while now. I wanted my clothes to not just be a piece of clothing but to show my style and to be looked at as art. After support from my family and friends, I finally started my own clothing business in 2020. My brand is called Do Not Dare, it is a street style brand where I sell things from sweatsuits to shirts, hats, to bags. I even wanted to add a different aspect to my brand by offering customs, if someone sees a design they love of mine they have a choice to pick their own color scheme. As running a business has its obstacles, especially while attending college I’m still working hard to drop new things every season. My clothing brand helped me also branch out into a styling business and custom jean pieces as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s expected. Nothing comes easy or blast off overnight, it takes hard work. My mom has a business so she taught me everything I know today that helped me with my clothing brand. So I didn’t have struggles with making the clothes and the merchandise I had to put out during deadlines. But consistency was a big struggle for me because I was used to making clothes for myself and doing it on my time so I just had to adjust to deadlines and being productive everyday. The main struggle I did have and still do sometimes is juggling a business as well as being a full time college student. I did work on a system that helps me get my work done as well as get orders out on time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fashion designer. I have my own streetwear brand as well as a stylist business. I make sweatsuits, graphic tees, shorts, sweats, hoodies, short sets, tanks, blinged out shirts, hats, tote bags, etc. What sets me apart from others is that I have a passion for clothes so every piece I make with passion and out a lot of effort in. I started my brand because I wanted everybody to see my work and to understand my passion. It was never about the money. I never expected me to make real money from it but I did. So I love that I can do what I love while also getting paid for it. I wanted to make streetwear clothes that can help people express themselves like how clothes help me to express myself. I wanted to look at every piece of clothing I finish as artwork. I want my clothes to be like a painting… full of colors, emotions, actions, life, and so much more will be shown all through my pieces. It won’t just be a clothing line it will be a way to express myself and show how you are feeling.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I like the diversity that is in my city. You can see different styles from different people. And even meet all different types of people. What I least like about my city is that some people try to be in competition or talk about others instead of congratulating them or even support them.
