Life & Work with Christopher Helms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Helms.

Hi Christopher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Started in 2012 working as a foreman for another guy. I worked for a few years learning the business, and he sold his company to someone and we didn’t have the same vision so we parted ways and I branched out on my own with the help of a good friend and slowly have grown with the last four years of economic growth due to our blazing economy.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting out of the work truck with my guys and letting others do the labor while I focused on growing the company was the biggest struggle, as well as keeping and finding talent.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a landscape design and installation firm that services the greater Houston area. We have many arms, including design, installation of plants, trees, and grass, synthetic turf, putting greens, landscape lighting, irrigation, pavers, decorative concrete, drainage, custom fences, etc. What sets us apart is our synthetic grass/landscape combos.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
A lot of people lost their businesses and life savings due to shutdowns. That is very sad, and I hope somehow they are able to get their business back. I also learned that when people are forced to stay home, companies realize that they can get the same amount of work from their employees from home then they can in the office and are rethinking the office space moving forward and so maybe we see a shift in office space in the near future which could lower prices for space to get people back in. A great benefit for us was that people were stuck at home and called us to make their backyard look amazing since they were stuck there every day, which really kept us going and we did not feel any effects of the virus as far as our business. I guess that’s why I am so sad for all the bars, restaurants, etc. that have lost everything.
