Life & Work with Darius Gullett of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darius Gullett.

Hi Darius, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I always knew I was funny and I knew I liked stand up comedy but didn’t put 2 and 2 together until college. I remember hanging with some friends and I was telling a story and in the middle of my story my friend stopped me and said “you’re really funny, you should try standup comedy.” It was interesting hearing it from someone and that pretty ignited the flame.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Heck no, but there’s beauty in the struggle. For me personally, I’m not from Houston so I had to work extremely hard to network and meet other comedians and prove to them that I’m a legit comic and deserve to be here. I’ve done sets in front of only 3 people, open mics at 1:45 am, showed up to mics and 8 pm but can’t perform until 10:45 pm because other established comics got pull over you (even sometimes you’re better). You’re lucky to get a free drink before you see a payday. It’s not all sweet but I respect the process.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a stand up comedian. I love being on stage and telling jokes, Comedy shows are therapeutic, a different type of energy and it feels good when people can appreciate the art. I’m proud how consistent I’ve been. It’s amazing to see how far I’ve come. The progression is beautiful and that makes me proud.

What are your plans for the future?
Travel! I love the local scene but I’m ready to take this work on the road. I want to share my comedy with the world plus traveling is one of my personal favorite hobbies so I’m excited to get that opportunity. I’m also looking to establish my own room in Houston when I can host my own shows at.
