Life & Work with Desiree Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Wright.

Hi Desiree, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started “playing “ in makeup casually on myself a few years after I graduated college. (Around 2014). I was never one of the lucky ones who knew what I wanted to do at a young age. After I graduated college I got stuck into the work, home, repeat life. Everything was routined. Not really knowing knowing my purpose or having a passion for anything was taking its toll on me. Everyday after work, I would watch YouTube videos of people doing their makeup, hair or anything beauty. That was my happy place. That Christmas I received my first makeup palette/case and brow kit. That kind of gave me my push. I begin practicing different looks on myself, my friends and my sisters. I would just post myself and the look I did that day on my social media platforms. And starting off I got great feedback. I began to do a few looks on myself every week and post them. People would begin to say “do mine !” But I wasn’t confident enough yet. I decided to finally take clients after I felt comfortable with other people’s faces (Which was about 2 years later). I never thought this would be my career but I ended up loving everything about it. I’ve been doing makeup professionally now for almost 6 years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. People see the glitz and glamor but never the hard work, the fear of people not reacting to your work the way you would have liked the doubts and much more. A few struggles along the way for me was realizing I can’t please everyone. I could literally do my best work on a client and she did not like it. This hasn’t happened much, and if it does it’s hardly ever voiced, but body language will never lie.. When being in a serviced based field I had to learn fast everyone is different. My struggle was acknowledging that, accepting that and learning how to adjust to each client’s wants. Just because one client loved something, doesn’t mean the next one will. And vice versa.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional makeup artist, I specialize in soft glam applications, and bridal makeup. I’m most known for how natural and clean my makeup looks.. I never try to change the way someone appears to look completely, my goal primarily is to insinuate and/or enhance the features already given. I take pride in that. I believe my personality is what sets me apart from others. Everyone always tells me how much they love how I interact, how relatable and genuine I am. We all have not-so-good days, but I try to give off good vibes when I can. I am actually surprised because I never knew how many people that offered a service didn’t speak to their clients at all. So when Me being me is celebrated it’s always a win.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I just started listening to “the brew “ podcast, so far so good. I’m not really into blogs and podcasts because a lot is f things like that can turn negative but I really like this one so far.
