Life & Work with Detrick Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Detrick Jones.

Hi Detrick, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into coaching was an interesting journey. After six months without a job, I was finally hired on as a long-term substitute in Spring ISD. I eventually finished Region four to get my teaching certification. I promoted to a para-professional. From there, I volunteered coaching at Twin Creeks where I worked as a para. I then took a full time teaching position and expanded an elementary basketball and volleyball league in Spring. As I groomed the elementary students that I taught, I was still coaching at the middle school as well.

I continued that journey for ten years in Spring. During that time, I met Coach Kevin Franklin of Houston Havok, who invited our students to attend some of their games. While attending, I enjoyed the product I witnessed. I then talked to him about being an assistant coach for his team. I volunteered my services as an assistant coach for four years with Houston Havok. During that time I was still being a loving father, husband and school coach. One could say I stretched myself to the limit. Two years ago, I switched over to Humble ISD to continue my coaching career. I coached middle school football, basketball and track. I started my own semi-professional basketball team last year but had to put it on hold due to the pandemic. We restarted in October with the women’s league.

My team Crescent City Lady Bombers went undefeated (9-0) and was co- champions of the league. I coached my middle school 8th grade team to a district championship a team (8-0) and co district championship b-team (7-1). I’m now in my second season of my men’s semi-pro team, and we are off to a great start (2-0). I love what I do! I enjoy mentoring our youth and bringing out the best in them no matter the sport.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road to say the least. Coaching keeps me busy. Long hours, time away from family, keeping up with grades, managing attitudes from the kids, the parents, my women’s team and men’s team are various struggles I’ve dealt with. Another struggle is trying to obtain sponsorship for my teams. It’s never easy.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a teacher and coach, I teach and coach in Humble ISD, and I own a men’s and women’s semi-pro basketball team. I’m most proud of the lives I get to impact in a positive way on a daily basis. I’m known for my leadership. What sets me a part is my ability to communicate and reach those I’m helping.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Leadership and effective communication skills.
