Life & Work with Hannah Orin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Orin.

Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I decided one day in July 2021 to post a video about “packing my husband’s lunchbox.” Just on a whim.

I had seen plenty of ‘lunch packing’ videos on Tiktok before but none that fit my family’s specific needs- how and what to pack for someone who works long shifts. My husband is a corrections officer and works a few 16 hours shifts a week. I figured that if I couldn’t find a video about “how” to pack this specific type of lunch box, I’d just make a video myself and maybe it could help others in my situation.

To my surprise, my videos began to go viral. Between ‘lunch packing’ and sharing recipes, my audience grew rather quickly.

I then began posting videos about other facets of homemaking, such as: cooking, baking, my life as a stay at home mom, cleaning tips, decorating, and most recently, gardening. I also created a recipe blog which has all the recipes I make on my videos.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first year of making Tiktoks was very smooth, which I am very grateful for, but as soon as I hit that one-year mark (July 2022), I experienced an immense personal struggle.

From February to July 2022, I was documenting my second pregnancy in addition to my regular content. It was such a wonderful few months to share that experience with my followers. However, in July, I went into preterm labor, lost my son, and in turn, almost lost my life as well. Saying this was extremely difficult is an understatement. I left Tiktok for a little while to grieve and to decide whether I should come back and make content.. or not.

After some thought, I decided to eventually make a video about my son. I felt that I had built this strong online relationship with my followers by letting them into my life. This event is and was a major part of my life, so I believed it was important to be vulnerable and share what happened. If anything else, maybe someone could relate to my son’s story. So, nervously, I made a video explaining briefly about losing my son. Then posted on Instagram a message where people could read more about it if they wanted to.

I was so worried people would be cruel (which is usually on the internet) but to my surprise, everyone was incredibly kind. The messages and comments I received reminded me that there were people on that platform who do care. It reminded me that making videos for those people is something I truly do enjoy doing. So when I was ready, I began posting my regular content again.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m currently focused on expanding my knowledge and skills regarding homemaking. I’m doing this not only for my own benefit and to love my family better, but also, so I can teach others. I think homemaking is really becoming a “lost art” and I’m determined to keep it alive in my own family and on social spheres like Tiktok. I think social media is a perfect way to teach and share this art. I’m excited to continue doing it!

How do you think about happiness?
Lots of things make me happy: spending time with my family, learning new recipes, making videos, gardening, cross stitching, riding horses…but truly, the thing that makes me the most ‘happy’ is pursuing Christ, following Him, and seeing His purposes unfold in my life…even when life is extremely hard. I don’t know better joy than that.
