Life & Work with Heba Toulan of Magnolia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heba Toulan

Heba, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up I was a stage kid, doing dance recitals and plays, most memorably at the Deaf Way at Gallaudet University. After a major life change, I decided to give modeling a try and ended up on the movie set of Jesus as Mother Mary. I aim to bridge that huge gap between the acting/modeling industries and people with disabilities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve encountered multiple rejections in auditions, mostly because I am Deaf. A lot of directors had a specific vision and I was an hindrance (I’ve been told this many times), and I push through. I’ve been told I’m inspiring when I’m just pushing through and refusing to accept a no. I take these rejections as detours, not a return trip. I hope that there are more projects that see people with disabilities as part of the society, not something that they push aside. Everybody has a disability, visible or not – and disability isn’t a trend, nor is it a taboo.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an actor, best known for the Jesus film; Fifi in The Window Washer; Deepa in SENSES and more. I’m also a model, representing multiple brands such as Kymaereo, Kimish, Gwen Davis, and more. I’m also a writer; I wrote a couple plays, “Camellia for Camille,” and “Day of the Dead.” I also worked as a Director of Artistic Sign Language at a recent Shakespearean festival. To keep working is to discover new skills and adapt as part of my whole package.

Any big plans?
No big projects although I hope Fifi returns to the big screen soon. I’m also aiming to make it to 22 runway shows. The trick is to keep trying.
