Idaly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, I’m Idaly — and getting be a photographer was anything but a straight line.
I grew up in Chihuahua, Mexico, spent nine years studying and working in business administration, and built what looked like a perfectly respectable career. I sat behind a desk from 9am to 7pm every day, surrounded by spreadsheets and paperwork — and I drove home crying more times than I can count. That life looked fine from the outside. It was slowly breaking me on the inside.
Then, almost by accident, I bought a camera.
I started watching YouTube tutorials, just curious. And somewhere between learning about light and composition and spending hours behind a lens, something clicked — not just in the camera, but in me. I felt like myself for the first time in years.
After living in Playa del Carmen for 7 years I took my savings, flew to Barcelona, and enrolled at the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya to study photography properly. I fell in love with the city and stayed for a couple of years, working as a photographer for travelers and tourists. I won’t pretend it was easy — for a long time I felt like an imposter, someone who had abandoned a real career just because. I wasn’t sure I was good enough to make this work.
But my clients told me otherwise. And slowly, I started to believe them.
I spent the pandemic in Barcelona, and when the world opened back up, I came home to Playa del Carmen — where I’ve been living and shooting professionally since 2020.
Traveling changed how I see this work. I’ve visited more than 18 countries, and I know firsthand how hard it is to come home with photos that actually capture how a place felt — always asking strangers, always getting the same selfie angle, never quite getting it right. That experience is a big part of why I take beach and travel sessions so seriously. I want your photos of this place to feel like the real thing.
I’ve been doing this for 10 years now, and my philosophy hasn’t changed: at the end of our lives, the photographs are what remain. They’re how we revisit the moments that shaped us, and how we remember the people we’ve loved.
I wish I had more photos from before — before I lost my grandparents, before time moved the way it does. That feeling is part of why I show up the way I do for every single session.
When I’m not shooting, you’ll find me…
Rowing in a canoe, swimming in open water, at the gym, cooking, or making things with my hands for the studio and my home. I’m usually deep in a conversation about psychology and spirituality, too. I share my home with my little cat Makayla, who I’m convinced is the real boss around here.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting over from scratch was one of my biggest challenges. Even though I had already done it twice before in my life, moving to a new country without knowing anyone, without a support system, and without having anyone to fall back on was incredibly difficult. I was raised by a single mother, so from an early age I learned the importance of being independent and finding solutions on my own.
Throughout my life, I have also experienced several unexpected losses of close family members. Those experiences completely changed the way I see life. They reminded me that life is fragile, temporary, and can change in an instant. Because of that, I don’t take time for granted. It has inspired me to focus on creating meaningful memories, not only for myself but also for the people I photograph.
Those challenges shaped both who I am as a person and how I approach my work. They taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of preserving moments that can never be recreated.
Life is fleeting
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer based in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, specializing in destination weddings and vacation photography for couples and families visiting the Caribbean. My goal is not only to create beautiful images but also to give my clients an experience they will genuinely enjoy and remember.
I’m always looking for ways to improve, whether it’s refining the quality of my photography, learning new techniques, or making each session more seamless, professional, and fun. I believe that great photographs come from real emotions, and creating a relaxed atmosphere is a big part of that.
What I’m most proud of is the genuine connection I build with my clients. I naturally make people feel comfortable, valued, and seen because they truly matter to me. That trust allows them to be themselves in front of the camera, resulting in authentic, emotional images.
What sets me apart is my commitment to excellence. I strive to deliver not only beautiful photographs but also an experience where every client feels cared for, appreciated, and confident that they made the right choice. My goal is for them to leave with memories they will treasure for a lifetime.
How do you think about luck?
I believe I’ve been fortunate to make a living doing what I truly love. Not everyone has the opportunity to turn their passion into a career, and I’m genuinely grateful for that. At the same time, I don’t think luck alone creates success.
Throughout my life, I’ve experienced both good and bad luck. Some difficult moments challenged me and forced me to become more resilient, while certain opportunities came at the right time because I had prepared myself to recognize and take them.
I’ve always worked hard to create my own opportunities, stay motivated, believe in myself, and keep going even when things didn’t go as planned. I think luck may open a door, but dedication, persistence, and continuous growth are what allow you to walk through it.
I also feel incredibly fortunate to live and work in one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, where I have the privilege of capturing some of the happiest moments in people’s lives. It’s something I never take for granted.
