Life & Work with Jasmine Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Harris.

Jasmine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

The Pretty Perfectionist started when I had a layover in Chicago, Illinois and lodged in a well-known hotel franchise. I worked for a major airline which meant living out of luggages and hotel rooms (that was the norm of my career). Rooms were a major concern sometimes based on the level of cleanliness. Those moments when I pulled back the bedsheets and said “oh no, I can’t sleep on that!” I decided to solve a problem, and that was to create disposable bedding for women travelers. I pursued the idea and with all my valuable resources, I was able to develop my product (disposable pillowcases). I had the leverage to tell my coworkers and give them free disposable pillowcases for feedback, and critiques. Word travels fast when you work for the airlines so I was able to market to coworkers and those coworkers told family and friends. My strategy allowed me to distribute domestically and internationally. I was worried that I didn’t have the proper marketing skills but I never forgot how powerful “word- of -mouth” can really be.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?

Has it been a smooth road? Yes, and no. Yes because I was fortunate enough to have the right people come into my life and assist me with their strengths in certain industries that benefited my business. “Closed mouths don’t get fed.” I had to suck up my pride and ask questions about things I simply didn’t have the answers too or understand. Knowledge is power.

No, because I was self funded. That meant I was working to pay my day -to -day  bills along with trying to cultivate my business, and boy was it tough! Also, I had moments of panic because they were times when my business didn’t make a dollar. But you have to trust the process! One month may not be so good, the may be steady and then another you can hit a spike in your sales.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I design disposable bedding products for women travelers. The avid woman traveler has the ability to apply our bedding products and dispose of them on checkout from their lodging. I’m most proud of connecting with other businesswomen that see the need to benefit from my products within their business and/or personal lives. What sets my product apart is that we create a product that “just makes sense”.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?

I was fortunate to have a successful business during the COVID-19 crisis. My product was in high demand at the time when it was extremely needed to create sanitized environments. So the major lesson I have learned is to meet the demand. I found it very important to market to specific yet exclusive markets where my product can meet a need.
