Life & Work with Jay Marroquin of Second Ward, East Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Marroquin

Hi Jay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Jay Marroquin. I’m a fashion photographer/creative director that was born and raised in Houston, TX. I’m currently based in Houston’s Second Ward and have opened up a creative space called MYSTUDIO HTX to allow creatives to have a private space without breaking the bank. I think it’s important as this was a huge hurdle for me when I was starting out as a professional photographer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road but also not a rough road. I’ve invisioned this small studio concept for some time. Of course like all businesses, getting the word out is the main struggle. We do seem to have some organic growth and the area we chose for our studio is only up and coming. This project is still being refined and I look forward to the day it’s completed. At that point we’ll put some marketing dollars behind it to help get the word out via strategic adverstising.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
If you ask anyone that knows me in a professional setting, they would say I’m a pretty established fashion photographer, and a pretty badass runway photograher. I would like to think my work reflects the passion I put into it and all the hard work that goes into this craft.

I’ve been lucky to have collaborated or worked with some industry giants, including AVEDA, Chloe Dao, Christian Siriano, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Sofitel Luxury Hotels. I’ve also had work published in VOGUE, ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, and New York Magazine. Networks that have used my work include ABC, CNN, Lifetime, and FashionTV.

How do you think about luck?
I’m not sure how I feel about “luck” as a measure. I believe you make your own luck whether good or bad by the decisions you make and the work you put in.

Pricing:

  • Most of my pricing is a la carte and custom made for each client.
  • Standard professional headshots offered at MYSTUDIO HTX however do start around the $200 price point with even an express package for $125.
