Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Champion.
Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
More than two decades ago, I applied for a Matchmaker position with It’s Just Lunch after seeing a job posting on Monster.com.
I worked as a Matchmaker for two years, and while I learned a great deal about the industry, what I loved most was interviewing and connecting singles. I loved hearing their stories, learning what made them tick, and understanding what they were looking for in a life partner.
That passion eventually led me into recruiting. For years, I worked in recruiting and executive search while also teaching group fitness throughout Houston. Between recruiting and teaching, I met thousands of singles all over Houston and developed a deep understanding of what motivates singles, how they connect, and what they are truly looking for in a relationship.
As I continued recruiting singles, I began to realize that successful matchmaking required more than simply introducing two people. It required truly understanding who they were, what they valued, and what they were looking for in a relationship. Just as importantly, it required knowing both singles well enough to recognize when there was genuine potential for a meaningful connection.
More than fifteen years ago, I launched Champion Connection in Houston and began building my own matchmaking business one client at a time. It was a grassroots effort built through referrals, word of mouth, recruiting, and relationships throughout Houston.
In 2020, I launched DateShape, combining my experience in matchmaking, recruiting, fitness, and community-building into one company dedicated to helping singles find meaningful relationships.
I’ve spent more than two decades interviewing, recruiting, and connecting singles, and over the years I’ve developed a method to help singles date with intention. Too often, singles move too fast, bond over a first dinner date, overshare, or dismiss a potential connection before giving it a second date. My method helps singles date intentionally, create healthy boundaries, focus on values, and allow a connection to unfold naturally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As the world reopened, I began investing heavily in Texas. I built relationships beyond Houston in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio through recruiting, interviews, events, and meetups. I hosted singles events, hired recruiters, and focused on creating opportunities for singles to meet in real life.
COVID changed dating in many ways. Singles became more isolated and, in some cases, more selective. Many were coming out of divorces, breakups, or years on dating apps and had become increasingly focused on avoiding the wrong match rather than staying open to the right one. It reinforced my belief that connection requires effort, intention, and sometimes a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been in matchmaking for over 20 years. Early in my career, I worked for a national matchmaking agency and learned the industry from the inside out. Over the years, I built two businesses on my own and have always looked for opportunities to help singles meet their match.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that love isn’t always in your ZIP Code. Sometimes it’s not even in your city. That’s one of the reasons I expanded beyond Houston and began building relationships throughout Texas.
After COVID, I saw singles become more isolated and, in many cases, more selective. I began hosting singles events because I wanted singles to meet in real life, feel chemistry, experience energy, and make connections beyond a profile or photograph.
Today, I serve as a Texas Matchmaker for Three Day Rule, one of the nation’s largest matchmaking companies, while continuing to host DateShape events throughout Texas. Whether through matchmaking, recruiting, or events, my goal has always been the same: to create as many opportunities as possible for singles to meet, connect, and find a meaningful relationship.
Texas singles will date Texas singles. Sometimes your match isn’t in your ZIP Code—you just need someone to help you find them.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is seeing my children become confident, independent, compassionate young adults and do what they love. I’m a mom first.
I’m happiest when I’m helping others. I’ve spent most of my life as an athlete and fitness instructor. Professionally, I’ve spent my career recruiting, interviewing singles, hosting events, and curating introductions. My giving love language is service, and I feel most fulfilled when I’m connecting, encouraging, or helping singles move closer to their goals. I am a coach at heart. If I’m not helping others, I don’t feel at peace.
I am also a connector. I thrive on bringing singles together. Through recruiting, matchmaking, and events, I create opportunities for Texas singles to meet, connect, and build meaningful relationships.
Fitness has been a part of my life since I was seven years old. Teaching fitness for decades allowed me to build relationships throughout Houston, stay connected to my community, and help others become stronger and more confident. Weight training is where I find physical, mental, and emotional strength. I am happiest in a gym.
At the end of the day, I’m a mom, a Matchmaker, an event host, a connector, and a fitness enthusiast. Creating connection is what I love most about my work.
