Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Claussen.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From the very beginning, creativity has coursed through my veins, an innate passion that shaped my earliest memories. Yet, like many, I was nudged away from considering art as a viable career path. Despite the subtle discouragement, I continued to feel the call to create, leading to the inclusion of ceramics and black-and-white film photography in my college curriculum. These disciplines intertwined seamlessly with my love for the outdoors, ultimately defining my artistic journey.
After college, I found myself in a traditional desk job. While I was learning new things every day, I longed for creative expression. I discovered that my creativity flourished during travels and family gatherings, thanks to the portable nature of photography. However, it wasn’t until my husband stumbled upon a kiln for sale locally that my artistic journey truly began.
With the acquisition of the kiln, a fusion of mediums beckoned, and I enthusiastically dove back into the realm of ceramics. Balancing this newfound passion with my full-time job, I took a leap of faith and showcased my creations at local art festivals as an Emerging Artist.
Those early years were a whirlwind of self-discovery and growth. Through preparing my booth, honing my marketing skills, and unveiling my artwork to the world, I unearthed facets of myself previously untapped. While at similar times my employers’ encouragement opened doors to new opportunities in both art and marketing within my day-to-day roles. This support not only enhanced my experience and confidence in these fields but also fueled my commitment to dedicating more of my life to art as a career.
Today, I proudly bear the title of an eco-artist, intertwining salvaged natural materials with ceramics, acrylics, metal, and glass to create sculptures that reflect my reverence for the environment.
My artwork now adorns the walls and pedestals of Conroe Art League, Ardest Gallery, Spring Cottage Gallery, and Archway Gallery, a testament to the journey from hesitant creator to confident artist. But beyond personal accolades, I’m driven by a deeper purpose – to foster a connection between individuals and the natural world.
Through a program centered on artistic exploration in local parks and natural landscapes, I aim to not only nurture the well-being of participants but also champion the preservation of our precious natural spaces. Every sculpted form and every intricately crafted piece emphasizes the notion that art serves as a conduit for connection, empathy, and profound societal change.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating the path to becoming an artist hasn’t been a smooth journey, but I believe it’s been appropriately challenging. There were moments when I realized I was the one holding myself back from fully embracing art as my vocation. Additionally, societal norms and expectations often cast doubt on the profitability of pursuing a career in the arts.
I’ve come to understand the formidable hurdles that come with being a creative entrepreneur. As an artist, especially in the early stages, you’re not just a creator; you’re also an accountant, a marketing director, a website manager, a copywriter, and sometimes even your own cheerleader.
Acknowledging these realities has grounded my perspective. I’ve encountered setbacks and obstacles along the way that have tested my resolve. However, I also recognize the invaluable depth that my experiences in various jobs, relationships, and educational pursuits have provided me. These challenges have shaped me into a more resilient and multifaceted artist, preparing me for the demanding yet fulfilling path I’ve chosen.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my opinion, being a creative encompasses a multitude of aspects that continually surprise me. It’s not merely about working across various mediums but also about the diverse sources of inspiration that fuel my artistic endeavors. Moreover, maintaining positive habits becomes crucial to overcoming creative blocks.
Personally, I’ve found invaluable insights in both Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way” and Eric Maisel’s “Fearless Creating.” These resources offer practical tips and strategies to nurture a creative mindset and navigate the challenges of the artistic journey.
Establishing daily habits to keep the mind sharp and curious is essential for sustained artistic expression. Additionally, creativity thrives on openness and observation, qualities that are integral to the artistic process.
For many artists, including myself, clarity of vision plays a pivotal role. Once you determine your artistic voice and understand the message you wish to convey to the world, the act of creation becomes less daunting. It’s about knowing why you create and, ultimately, what you aim to express through your art.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For aspiring artists just starting out, I’d offer this advice: Begin by cultivating the right mindset and nurturing your spirit. Taking care of yourself is paramount; it’s the foundation upon which your creative journey rests. Surround yourself with supportive individuals and arm yourself with useful tools that will propel you forward.
Don’t hesitate to explore new avenues or try different approaches. Regretting missed opportunities is far worse than facing failure head-on. Embrace failure as a chance to grow and emerge stronger and wiser.
One of the biggest challenges for creatives is learning how to replenish their creative well. While some artists draw from pain and struggle, I’ve found that focusing solely on negativity can drain both creativity and hope. When I allowed negativity to dominate my thoughts, it hindered my ability to create impactful art.
Instead, I’ve learned to seek inspiration from sources that uplift and energize me. By focusing on positivity and maintaining a sense of hope, I’ve found my artistic voice strengthened, and my work has resonated more deeply with viewers. Trust in the power of positivity to fuel your creativity and lead you toward a fulfilling artistic journey.
