Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Totten.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Florida and raised in Oklahoma. I spent my whole life in Oklahoma, but I wanted something more, a life by the ocean. In 2016, I packed up my family and moved to Galveston, Texas. I picked it because it was the closest beach that wasn’t too far from my family in Oklahoma. We enjoyed island life for a few years before the tides of life started to shift.
When COVID hit in 2020, I made a pivotal decision. I left my toxic marriage to create a safe, stable life for my two boys. Shortly after, we moved off the island and began a fresh chapter together.
As a single mom, I took on a variety of jobs to keep us afloat, from professional house cleaning to other hustle work. I was constantly searching for something better, and one day I stumbled across a TikTok video about becoming a mobile notary and loan signing agent. With 10 years of mortgage industry experience, it clicked. This was something I could do.
By the end of 2024, after gradually building my business and learning the ins and outs of the notary world, I was fully supporting my family as a mobile notary and loan signing agent. What started as survival has grown into a thriving career, and I’m proud of the stability and future I’ve created for my boys.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Building my career as a mobile notary and loan signing agent wasn’t easy. In the beginning, I juggled multiple jobs — cleaning houses, delivering groceries, driving for rideshare apps — while carving out any spare moment to study and take assignments.
Late nights and weekends were spent at my little laptop after my boys were asleep, staring at bills and wondering how to stretch one paycheck into three. The uncertainty was overwhelming, but I kept going because they were watching me and I couldn’t let them down.
Every free moment outside parenting and work went into learning notary laws and documents, gradually taking assignments whenever I could. Just as I was gaining traction, my car’s engine gave out. Trading it in for another used car brought unexpected financial strain, but quitting wasn’t an option.
There were plenty of challenges, but I focused on small wins, leaned on family support, and kept my eyes on why I started. By the end of 2024, I was fully supporting my family as a mobile notary and loan signing agent, building a career that truly felt like mine.
The road was anything but smooth, but it shaped me. Every setback sharpened my resilience, and every small victory proved that perseverance pays off.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Mobile Notary and Loan Signing Agent serving clients across Houston and the surrounding areas. I handle everything from real estate closings to individual notary needs — legal documents, school forms, medical paperwork, financial agreements, and more — often meeting clients for the first time with documents I haven’t seen before.
What I’m most proud of is building this business from the ground up. I started with a small laptop and a budget printer and have grown it into a full-time career that supports my family. Every step has required persistence, creativity, and a commitment to giving each client the best experience possible.
Clients often describe me as professional, courteous, patient, and detail-oriented. Knowing they feel comfortable and supported is exactly what I strive for. I make it a point to arrive early, stay calm under pressure, and create a welcoming environment, no matter how complicated or stressful the signing may be.
For me, notarizing a document isn’t just a task, it’s an opportunity to help people at every stage of life. It’s a chance to guide them through some of life’s most important moments with confidence, care, and compassion.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Houston is its energy, diversity, and the endless opportunities the city offers. People from all walks of life make it feel vibrant and welcoming.
The one thing I’d change? The traffic, it’s definitely gotten heavier with the city’s growth. But on the bright side, that growth also brings more clients and new connections for my business.
