Life & Work with Joel Rojas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Rojas. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Joel Rojas

Bandido was established in April 2016 by Alejandro Campos & Joel Rojas. What ignited the launch of the Studio was a university project in which we developed a lighting product for the first time, the CTR 02 Table Lamp. This showed us that working with light could transform atmospheres, spaces, moods, textures, and materials. Ana Martinez joined as an associate partner in June 2017 as part of the company’s growth and structural strategy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has always been challenging. We have learned a lot about lighting and how this industry can be highly competitive and limited due to norms and regulations. On the other hand, economic downturns can affect consumer behavior and disruptions on the supply chain. But all these struggles led us to learn more about the business and form a solid team ready for overcoming any problem.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Bandido is a decorative lighting brand established in Puebla, Mexico in 2016.

The concept of the Bandido seeks the duality that has to do with light and shadow, always inspired by how light can be transformed by nature.

Bandido seeks to design and produce high-quality products that transcend time and generate a circular and local economy through artisanal and semi-industrial processes.

We are always exploring and combining materials, looking for those special characteristics that make materials express their nature, history, and composition. Part of the process is to mix different materials, textures, light and contrasts that fit the design concept.

Our focus, as previously mentioned, is to generate a local economy. Mexico is a country rich in textures, flavors, aromas, colors, and materials. We are always looking forward to reference the context and country where we live. That’s why we work with families who are experts in materials because we want to showcase their work and the richness of Mexico.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
First and foremost, find something that ignites a fire within you. For us, that fervor was kindled by light – a luminous passion that infuses our very being. It’s the spark that guides us as we embark on this journey. Also consider that the best lessons are learned when you fail. So be prepared for failure and take it as a lesson for improving yourself. Challenges will come, but you need to be adaptive to a fast-changing environment, iterate as much as you can, and commit yourself to delivering value to your customers.
