Life & Work with Julia Morales Clark

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Morales Clark.

Hi Julia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I wanted to be a news reporter since I was around 10 years old, watching my dad’s campaign I became fascinated. I learned in college that I could be a reporter but also cover sports as a career and quickly shifted gears. I worked hard to put together a demo reel and got a job at a small local news station in Sherman/Denison, Texas.

I worked long hours and most of the time “off the clock” to become better at shooting, writing, producing and being on air. I moved up markets several times and after covering the Triple-A team in Round Rock for two seasons I got my call to the Major Leagues. I have been the field reporter for the Houston Astros for the last nine seasons but in the beginning I went through an adjustment to the lifestyle and being the only female that traveled with the club. I arrived to Houston when the team was losing 100 games and watched them turn into one of the best teams of the decade in the middle of a golden area of the franchise.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting a start in journalism and broadcasting can be really difficult. Most in the industry want experience and the struggle is finding a place to start. I was lucky to find a news station that would take a chance on a young female in the sports department. They trusted me to do every part of the job. Finding my way around teams and coaches and locker rooms was all an adjustment early in my career. I had to learn how to be professional without coming off mean and friendly without being flirty. I also felt like I needed to prove myself early on but it all made me stronger as a person and better at the job along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the field reporter for the Houston Astros on the team network of AT&T SportsNet and also host pregame and postgame shows for the Houston Rockets. As the Astros reporter, I am with the team starting from spring training in February until the end, covering every game home and on the road, which means traveling with the team. I am one of the three broadcasters for the games and provide insight and commentary on the team and any updates surrounding the club. I am proud of the relationships I’ve created with the players and coaches and those around the team and my ability to share stories of what makes them so great. With my platform, I have joined the Board for Houston Pets Alive, a no-kill animal rescue in Houston and have held numerous fundraising events to benefit the rescue. I have a large Houston sports fan following and really enjoy interacting with the fans in this city during such a special time for the franchise.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I made Houston home pretty quickly, falling in love with the many unique areas of the city, the great food, the parks and great places to go for a run.

The people of Houston are diverse and open-minded and love their sports.
