Life & Work with Kalpna Bora

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kalpna Bora.

Kalpna Bora

Hi Kalpna, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hi. I am Kalpna. I am from India. I was bitten by a dance bug during my formative years. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by art, music, dance, drama, and the allure of the stage. I started very early with my classical dance training (kathak) at the age of 4.

My growing years were exposed to lots of creative activities like dancing, stage performances, inter-school competitions, singing, and art activities. My passion for dance and drama blossomed into a lifelong dedication and determination, and it propelled me to try my luck in the entertainment industry. I have worked as an actor in the television industry (back in India) for a few years.

After working in many different professions, my love and passion for dance brought me back to the world of rhythms and performances on stage. I moved to the US in 2018 and decided to venture into dancing, choreography, and teaching young minds. I have an Indian Dance School (Nrityakalpna Dance School) where I train young kids and adults in Bollywood and Kathak (Indian Classical Dance).

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that dance is a powerful form of expression that offers multiple benefits to the personality. It aids in the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social development of a child. My aim is to spread love and awareness about our culture and craft to the next generation and keep the community united with the joy of learning and dancing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not really. It was not easy to start something new in a new country with a toddler and no friends and family around. But I believe when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Thanks to social media platforms and my never-quitting attitude, I eventually landed my first student in the first month of the school opening, who brought in 10 others. Though it was affected by the 2020 pandemic, we picked up right where we left off, and it has been a gradual growth ever since then.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Choreographer, Dancer, Stage performer, and Dance Teacher.

I have had formal training in the Indian classical dance form – Kathak. I have worked as an actor in India for a few years. My other skills are drawing, painting, and sewing. I am proud of all my achievements and the fact that I know I have a long way to go and learn in life.

My never-quitting approach and my continuous yearning to get better at things that I love sets me apart from everyone I have ever met in my life.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
My book – is Atlas Shrugged. I have a master’s degree in Nutrition and Food Science. So, I like to listen to health podcasts that help me keep healthy and fit for my very active lifestyle.
