Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Daniel.
Hi Karen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Looking back, I think my journey really began in college, where I took two years of photography classes. We shot on film and developed our images in the darkroom, and I was fascinated by the entire process. It gave me a strong foundation and sparked a passion that would eventually become my career.
Fast forward to 2013. I lost my job, and I think my husband could tell I was feeling discouraged. One day, he surprised me with a basic camera kit. It wasn’t anything fancy, but that gift changed my life. From that moment on, I immersed myself in learning. I took every class I could find, practiced constantly, and worked to improve my skills.
Then I discovered Kelly Brown, an internationally recognized newborn photographer and educator. I enrolled in one of her newborn photography classes, and I was completely hooked. That was the moment I realized I had found what I truly wanted to do. I decided to specialize in maternity, newborn, and cake smash photography because I fell in love with documenting those fleeting early years of childhood.
Today, I serve families from Houston, The Woodlands, and the surrounding communities in my home studio. My goal is to create a relaxed, joyful experience from beginning to end. My style is elegant, classic, and timeless, with a focus on creating portraits that feel natural today and won’t feel dated years from now. I guide my clients through every step of the process, from wardrobe planning to posing, so they can simply enjoy this special time with their family.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. New parents are often overwhelmed, and my goal is to create a calm environment where they can feel comfortable, supported, and confident throughout the entire session. Seeing families return for maternity sessions, newborn portraits, milestone sessions, and cake smashes as their children grow is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. Being invited to document so many milestones in a family’s life is something I never take for granted.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Like most small business owners, I have had plenty of challenges along the way. Building a photography business from scratch takes time, patience, resources, and a willingness to keep learning. I have worn every hat. I’m the photographer, the editor, the marketer, the accountant, and customer service all at once. There were definitely moments of self-doubt, especially early on, when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions.
One of the biggest challenges was learning that creating beautiful images is only one part of running a successful business. I had to learn marketing, pricing, client communication, contracts, SEO, bookkeeping, and everything else that happens behind the scenes. Those skills didn’t come naturally. They came through experience, a lot of trial and error, and a commitment to improving every year.
Newborn photography also comes with a great deal of responsibility. Parents are trusting you with their most precious little person, so I made it a priority to invest in education and safety training. That has never been an area where I wanted to cut corners.
Looking back, every challenge taught me something valuable. I believe those experiences have made me not only a better photographer, but also a better business owner and a better person. They remind me that growth doesn’t happen overnight, and that consistency, hard work, and genuinely caring about the families I serve have been the biggest reasons I’ve made it to where I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I focus my work on maternity, newborn, and cake smash photography, capturing the earliest chapters of a family’s story. Early on, I knew I wanted to build my business around a specific niche instead of photographing every genre. I wanted to become an expert in one area rather than trying to do a little bit of everything. That decision has allowed me to continually refine my craft and provide a level of care and expertise that comes from years of dedication to this work.
I guide my clients through every step of the process, from planning their session and selecting pieces from my client wardrobe to posing and creating portraits they’ll treasure for years to come. My goal is to make the entire process feel easy and enjoyable, especially for new parents who already have so much on their minds.
If there’s one thing I’m known for, I hope it’s creating timeless portraits that never go out of style. Trends come and go, but I want my clients to look back at their images 20 or 30 years from now and love them just as much as they did the day they received them.
I’m also incredibly passionate about newborn safety. I’ve invested years in education and continue learning to ensure every baby is photographed safely and comfortably. I always follow a baby-led approach, allowing each session to move at the baby’s pace rather than forcing poses or rushing the process.
What I’m most proud of is the relationships I’ve built with my clients. Many families first come to me for maternity portraits and continue returning for newborn, milestone, and cake smash sessions. Watching those babies grow and being invited back to document each new chapter of their family’s story is something I never take for granted.
I think what sets me apart is the combination of experience, patience, and personal attention I bring to every session. I want every family to feel cared for from the moment they book until they receive their finished portraits. My clients know they aren’t just showing up for photos. They’re trusting me to preserve memories they’ll pass down for generations, and that’s a responsibility I value deeply.
How do you think about luck?
I think luck can open a door, but it’s up to you to walk through it. Looking back, there were definitely moments that changed the course of my life. Losing my job in 2013 didn’t feel like good luck at the time, but it led to my husband giving me my first camera, which ultimately changed everything. Discovering Kelly Brown’s work and realizing there was an entire world of newborn photography was another turning point that helped me find my niche.
Beyond those moments, I believe this business has been built through consistency and a genuine love for what I do. I’ve spent years investing in education, practicing my craft, and always looking for ways to improve. Every year, I try to become a better photographer and create an even better experience for my clients.
I also feel incredibly fortunate to have clients who trust me enough to come back year after year. Being invited to photograph a maternity session, then a newborn, and later a cake smash or milestone session is something I never expected when I first picked up a camera. Seeing those families grow alongside my business has been one of the greatest blessings of this journey.
