Life & Work with Karter K

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karter K.

Hi Karter, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am Kendrick Karter, better known as Karter K, videographer and film producer, and the face behind Rich Legacy Studios. My career in this industry started around 2015 with me just trying to find my niche. With little experience, it was hard to land a job or intern, so I purchased a microphone and camera to seek out major influencers for interviews. I attended South by Southwest, an annual music festival held in Austin, TX, and began my journey as a media host. I had a raw, natural talent as a red-carpet host that wowed both my interviewees and viewers. This was the start of my career in the film and entertainment industry. In 2016, Los Angeles based media outlet “Hip Hop Weekly Magazine” was the first to notice my talents and offer me an opportunity as a media correspondent. My role as a media correspondent soon turned into an offer to work as a video editor for the company. This was the lead I needed to open doors of new opportunity and experiences that I had dreamed of. After completing an internship in hopes of gaining experience and exposure, I instead gained something that changed my career and my life forever- invaluable advice from a mentor. With this advice, I was able to alter my way of thinking, which in turn, altered business and took it to new heights. I am now the proud owner of my own film + production company, based in Houston,TX, Rich Legacy Studios.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not, anything worth having usually comes with some sort of fight. For me and my journey, getting people to believe in me and see my talent with no formal training, education, and little experience was probably one of the hardest struggles to overcome. One way I was able to overcome was by locking in with myself, believing in myself more than anything, and always looking for chances to perfect my craft along the way. Another obstacle I would say I faced along the way was trying to stay ahead of what society deemed as trendy at the time. In this industry, I think you have to be more of a trendsetter than trend follower. My creativity was (and is) constantly being challenged, I was (am) continuously looking for ways to make my work stand out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a film director and producer and the Founder of Rich Legacy Studios. I direct and produce everything from real estate listing videos, to music videos, food commercials, and nightlife. I specialize in telling stories through quality video content. My portfolio is extremely diverse, having produced content for BMW, creating ads for Ciroc, directing for oil and gas clients, and covering some of music’s biggest names. I’m most proud of the team that I’ve built along the way. I pride myself on being able to get a lot of things done, but at the rate that my company started to grow, I needed like-minded individuals on my side to accomplish all that we have. I’m most proud of and most grateful for the entire Rich Legacy team that is currently on this journey with me. What sets Karter K and Rich Legacy Studios brands apart from others is the quality and speed of the content we deliver. The passion I put into each project I’m a part of is what makes my content stand out. As I mentioned above, I specialize in telling stories through digital content. The content I provide customers with makes their audience want to buy into or be a part of whatever is being promoted.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think it’s safe to say the entire start of my career came from me taking a risk. When I made the decision to dress up and hitch a ride to South by Southwest with hopes of gracing at least one red carpet, it was a risk. All I had was confidence in myself that I could master media correspondence. It was a risk to even attend the event with no training or credentials; however, I ended up interviewing Cardi B, Kevin Gates, and Migos. With that being said, risks are certainly necessary and without them, we are only left to wonder “what if?”
