Life & Work with Kathryn Mitchell of Houston, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Mitchell

Hi Kathryn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a self-taught photographer, who started as a hobbyist. When the world paused in 2020, I had a lot of time to reflect on what I wanted to do as a career, and I realized that what I loved was people. I loved being a part of everyone’s most tender and sweet moments, from dating to engagements, and walking down the aisle, to pregnancy announcements and growing your family. I wanted to be a part of all of it, so I started my journey officially as a photographer and started taking clients. I moved to Houston in August of last year, and growing my business in a new state was no easy feat, but I am happy to say that this community has helped my business thrive far beyond what I had expected. I am so thankful for everyone who has welcomed me this year, and has been a part of my journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting over in a new state is by far the hardest challenge I have overcome in my business and personal life. The first few months were rough with little to no bookings since I didn’t know a single soul here, but I give credit to God for giving me new friends who shared their network, and showed me around the city! I am now booked into next year, and so thankful for new and returning clients!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in couples and wedding photography! I have the most amazing job where I get to document; joy, laughter, love, and tenderness in some of the most special days of your lives. I am a visual storyteller with a documentary style approach, so when we are together, the moment is about you, not myself and my camera. It’s about letting your personality, and interactions with your loved ones shine through, with minimal interruption from me! I am most proud of my ability of making you feel at ease, and comfortable in front of the camera. What sets me apart from this industry is that I care about making connections with my clients, and that they remember that they not only received beautiful images, but gained good memories and a friend for life.

What does success mean to you?
I am successful if I can provide for my family, be a good friend, and have time to pursue hobbies. If I have the freedom to explore, travel, and see family whenever I’d like, I would call that pretty successful! I would also define success as the ability to help others with their businesses, and life goals.
