Life & Work with Kennedi Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedi Robinson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It’s actually crazy to think about how I even got started doing makeup. Since a little girl, I have ALWAYS loved looking and feeling my best. I would binge-watch ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ for hours, just admiring how gorgeous the girls would be and all the glam that came along with pageantry. In my freshman year of college, I was a part of Texas Southern’s Ocean of Soul Marching Band as the baton twirler. Every week, I was constantly having to find a makeup artist or ask someone around, “Hey can you do me a little eyeshadow?”, which was absolutely annoying. It was until one day I was tired of waiting around on people to help, so I found a YouTube tutorial and never looked back. Eventually, COVID-19 happened which forced us to be in the house anyways, so I had more time to actually practice on my face without having to go out looking crazy with my ‘practice looks’. I slowly began to absolutely fall in love with the art of transforming/enhancing my face with all the different techniques that I was acquiring. I wanted to practice on anyone who would let me just play in their face and be creative. I eventually felt confident enough to openly say I was slowly accepting clients & soon after did my first ever Bridal Party/Wedding event. After that, I just knew it was God’s plan for me to be doing makeup, because it never would truly feel like a job. It became more of a comforting, stress reliever for me. GoodGotGlam is definitely like my own little baby.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not. There are days when I just don’t have it in me to pick up a makeup brush, not even to do my own makeup. I don’t always have the spunk & creativity flowing through for me to just create at my best. In addition, it can be discouraging at times when you don’t feel like people are supporting you but are just watching from afar, waiting for you to mess up or ‘flop’. Not being as booked as I wanted was something that had me down for a bit, until I realized to just appreciate my journey. Clients will come & go, but I had to learn to just let my work speak for itself. I had to learn to be confident in my work regardless of people were booking how I wanted them to. I’m a senior in college, trying to manage finishing school on top of trying to put my all into how I can expand & make my business stand out from others. I still wouldn’t trade any of it for the world, because I know it’ll all be worth it in the end once I see my dreams truly be my reality. I love what I do, and sometimes we get so caught up in wanting more that we take the little things for granted.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am 21-year-old self-taught makeup artist, specializing in enhancing the beauty that an individual already possesses. It is my duty to ensure that all of my clients leave my chair feeling absolutely gorgeous and more confident than they were when they sat down. I’ve never been a fan of loads of makeup, so I try my best to show that makeup is more than just piling a lot of product on to feel ‘pretty’. Makeup is about confidence, how you own that look. A simple ‘light beat’ can have you feeling like a million bucks. I’m most proud of the opportunities and relationships I have formed bonding over the art of makeup. Knowing that my work made someone feel beautiful is one of the most rewarding feelings a makeup artist could ask for. It’s not just about ‘Ohhhh, I know how to do makeup so I can make money.” Although I am grateful for the financial perks, it’s much deeper to me than that. What sets me apart from others is that I’m just unapologetically me. I am still human and have bad days. I have my days when I don’t feel pretty. I have moments when I feel like my work isn’t good enough. I’ve just learned to not let those moments and days defeat me, but to use them as fuel and encouragement to keep going so I can be my best to help the next person.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m one of the shyest, most awkward people EVER! It’s actually one of the funniest things to witness. Everything thinks I’m this bubbly, outgoing individual, when in reality, I have the WORST anxiety. When I’m doing makeup on someone I don’t know, I become the clumsiest most nervous person. It works for me though, because I produce some of my best work when I feel under pressure.
